Most pets transition from their current food to Grandma Lucy's within 7 - 10 days. Here at Grandma Lucy's we believe that the slower the better when it comes to transitioning your pet as it always yields the most favorable results. Starting with small amounts of Grandma Lucy's initially and gradually increasing the amount over time.
If I have a picky dog, then perhaps I would give this food some slack. But in all 4 years of my dog's life, she's known to be the dog who always chows down on her food within 1 minute. We recently switched her food to Grandma Lucy's because her old food has gotten way too expensive, and we thought that since this one is still the same kind of food (freeze-dried raw) AND it's at a better price, it would be the best of both worlds. The first few days after switching, she would still finish her food, and I thought that we could continue feeding her since she seemed to love it. But one day I noticed her spending almost 10 minutes on her food already, and there was still a good chunk of food left. And now after 2-3 days, she's barely eating this food. She spends the first few seconds sniffing it and then leave her bowl. I've never seen this happen to her.
I have been feeding my mastiff Honest Kitchen dehydrated food as a topper for her food for about a year and wanted to try something a little more affordable. I like the ingredients on this and the price for the 10lb bag is decent, however my dog refuses to eat it. I will say this has a very sharp unpleasant smell, almost like how it feels to smell bleach, a sharp burning smell. It is not appealing at all, so I’m not sure if it’s just the smell versus the flavor but she won’t touch it, and she’s not typically a super picky eater. I know that she doesn’t like celery and all of Grandma Lucy’s recipes have celery and this one does have a lot of visible celery pieces in the mix. I won’t repurchase this one and unfortunately cannot recommend.
I have Grandma Lucy's 3-pound bags of both the fish and chicken recipe on autoship every 6 weeks. It's a wonderful product sourced from fresh food. After lots of research, I know dry kibble isn't the healthiest way to feed my pup. But for convenience, I have found a high-quality dry food that I daily mix with either the fish or chicken recipe of Grandma Lucy. It's super simple. Whatever amount of food you feed (for my guy it's half a cup) you just mix in the same amount of hot water and let is set a few minutes. Then I mix in the Purina ProPlan and serve it still warm. My dog loves it and never turns up his nose at his food.
Fantastic nutritional dog food Came in a timely manner
I'm sure this is a great food, for my puppers though it hasn't been a good fit. Just a couple of observations for anyone who has a dog with allergies or a sensitive stomach. The mix has left staining around his muzzle and on any fur he decides to lick after eating. It has given him horrid flatulence, itchy skin and he has begun to lick and chew on his paws. Also, his stools are yellow, soft and most of the food doesn't look like it's been digested. I have also noticed he has been more anxious and depressed since being on this food. So, unfortunately we will not be buying this brand of food again.
All 3 of my dogs absolutely love it! There's plenty of pieces of chicken! Well worth the money!
I really wish I could get my money back with this one! It was a total waste!! My dogs hate it and there is like no meat. Regret buying this.
My two senior dogs love Grandma Lucy's. I highly recommend this product.
Extremely disappointed! On second day of food change-over, only getting a total of 1/2 cup mixed with her previous food, she started getting sick! She threw up eight times, panted constantly and up all night. Please think twice before feeding this food!
Dogs love this product. Appears to reduce their itching!
