I have an elderly smallish sized golden retriever and a Prius. can't decide--5 step one or 6 steps?

Answer by SaMoArtJul 23, 2025
It depends how high your dog can lift its feet really. I have a 100 lb Shepherd who’s elderly who has never loved stairs so the less of a step the better for her. As she gets older she doesn’t pick her feet up so high either. I loved that these could be made more gradual. For her the more gradual the better. Personally watching the way my girl is I’d suggest the 6 steps.

How does this attach to a bed?

Can these be used for a bed?

Answer by ChewyNov 19, 2025
This stair case is compatible with car, trucks, beds, couches, and SUVs.

Will it work for side door?

Answer by ChewyJun 14, 2025
These stairs are designed to be adjustable and can be adapted to different vehicle heights and door types, including side doors, as long as the dimensions are suitable.

I was using a ramp but it was heavy and bulky. Switched to these accordian steps and glad I did. Dogs use stairs at home so was easy for them. The lightweight and compact steps are much easier for me. Unfortunately, the hinged bar that keeps steps from just flattening out did a weird thing by protruding out suddenly one day. They still functioned so I didn’t worry about it. Today, the fastener on that hinge broke which rendered steps useless. I managed to reconnect it with a screw and nut but it is a weak spot for this product.

Was looking forward to this for our high bed and jeep tail-gate, for our eighty-pound pitty. The steps were not very deep and they were very slippery--even though they were coated. It was way too steep for the step depth and uneven, as they sloped upward. The more I extended the ladder, the more uneven they got. For our particular dog, it needed to be the same height but only three steps with much deeper, grittier steps, and more separation between the steps. Thus, not recommended for big dogs at all.

We were pretty hesitant due to so many choices and just weren't sure which one to purchase. This choice was a good one! The stairs are very sturdy and seem very durable. Our standard poodle is HIGHLY intelligent and I'm confident once he stops trying to train us, he will do great with these. We plan to have him use them getting in and out of the SUV. He has gone up once (with several treats of course along the way) with no issues, and we're still working with him going down the stairs. I have no doubt the stairs will be an excellent choice once he decides to 'get' it!

The steps needed to reach about 31 inches from the ground to the back of the car, and have enough actual step area for my 66 pound Labradors. This meant they were fully extended. In this position, the steps were about 20 degrees off the horizontal, which is a fairly significant slant. Both dogs slipped going up and down the steps. The material on the steps is not very grippy, which added to the slip factor. I don't want to make getting into and out of the car more difficult!

Steps are sturdy and seem well made. Have only had them for a short time now but so far so good. The foam on the handles holds the steps in place very well and my 16 yr old, 60lb husky to goes up and down just fine. Be sure to pull the steps out a bit so they're not too steep and your dog will do just fine. I would say they could be a bit wider but that is all. Not sure if they come in a wider size, but I would order the wide size if ordering again. Otherwise, these still work great, I like them very much and do recommend them.

I have a Subaru Crosstrek and these work great for the back hatch. They are easy to open and store, and one of my dogs uses them (the other is skeptical and we're working on it). Only 4 stars because the stairs are too wide to fit side door on Subaru Crosstrek. Another minor issue is how the the black material shows dirt. A neutral color would keep cleaner IMO.

Game changer!

Try getting a Great Pyrenees into a SUV. You will push, shove, lift, drag and try to lift again. The turn into 100lb sack of potatoes. The steps! Total game changer!

Offer them a treat up each step and BOOM they are in the back of the SUV and your back won’t be in traction for ) months! I recommend this 100%!!

I bought this for my aging dogs (and my aging back) to get up into our Kia Sorrento. It took some coercion to get them up and down a couple of times, but now, no problems and the steps are nice and firm for my 35 lb mutt and 55 lb Aussie Shepherd. Great product so far and I’d definitely recommend it.

Initially I used the stairs for my 80 lbs dog to get in and out of the back seat of my suv but it scratched up the door so I used it for her to get in the back or trunk area and of course that works better but I cant see her way in the back and she like to sit in the back seat. It works well, it's a little steep for a suv but would be perfect for a compact suv or car but who needs it then.

The steps are WAY TOO NARROW for a large breed dog. They are only 13.5 inches from side to side. The description says 16.9 inches, but that is the total folded width, not the width of the individual steps. That said, they were sturdy.
