Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?
Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.
Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?
Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.
Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?
Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.
Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

Groundbreaking Nutrition for Thyroid Health
Hill's breakthrough formula was designed to help felines with hyperthyroidism thrive. Cats with this disorder have an overactive thyroid gland—meaning it produces too much of the thyroid hormone—but limiting iodine in your cat's food can help regulate it. Prescription Diet y/d does that and more, all in a tasty kibble your cat will love. You may even see a difference in as little as three weeks.
Clinical Nutrition
With Hill's, it's not just high-quality ingredients that count. Their focus is on the proper balance of nutrients in every recipe. So, Hill's designed food to help pets with health conditions, providing the right nutrients to support their health. Hill's alliance with veterinarians puts them in a position to find a nutrition recommendation for your pet, no matter what health issue your pet is facing.
Formulated by Veterinarians
Hill's Prescription Diet started with a veterinarian's belief that some health issues could be managed through nutrition. What began as a theory has now been proven through extensive research by a team of over 220 vets, PhD nutritionists and food scientists. The results can be seen in Hill's Prescription Diet therapeutic pet foods.
Meeting the Highest Standards
Providing a food that delivers exactly what it says it does is Hill's number one priority. In fact, they perform over five million safety and quality checks every year. They've established relationships with trusted suppliers and will only accept ingredients that meet stringent standards.

The Taste Factor
You might know that Hill's Prescription Diet is good for your pet, but she's only concerned with the taste. Even though they place a heavy emphasis on nutrition, Hill's hasn't forgotten about palatability. Savory ingredients are combined to produce foods with enticing aromas, textures, and shapes that your pet can't resist.

Does its job well
By RECR on Feb 8, 2021
Late in 2019 our then 16 year old cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. They proposed a prescription drug that required periodic check ups due to side effects. We chose to forfeit this option and instead got a prescription for this product. We tried the dry version also but noticed our cat tended to throw up more often. Here we are 15 months later happy with this product and our cat has not seen any worsening of her condition. We also use a thyroid care natural product, non prescription. We plan to continue this option and avoid prescription medication. Only minor problem is that we can’t get a smaller quantity package. Our cat tends to prefer freshly opened cans.

Need advice and review
By Lennysmom on Feb 25, 2021
I was very impressed with how quickly the food was delivered for my cat. I gave Chewy 5 stars because of how efficient and quick the delivery was but my cat does not seem to like the food! I am not sure if I can manipulate the wet food in some way to get him to eat it. He would eat his old food off the top and leave all the new prescription food at the bottom. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will say that I think Hills should try to make other flavors and smaller cans, as I know that other pet owners have suggested as well.

Helped my girl
By FurMom on Jan 30, 2021
My girl Daisy has been using this food along with the Y/D dry food for exactly one year. She can not take the thyroid medicine so this was the second option we had & I am so glad this is working for her. Just had her labs done 2wks ago & the vet said "keep doing what you're doing everything is normal." This food is worth every penny!

YES TRY IT
By dudley on Jan 9, 2021
So my baby was diagnosed with a very high thyroid. In the 5's. We tried her on felimazole which her brother takes. She was one of the very few cats who had a terrible reaction to the medicine. Itching scratching terrible. The only other option was the iodine therapy. She's 15 and been through a lot in the last few years and I decided there was no way I was going to leave her in the middle of Covid at the vet for two or three days. She just would not do well. I was sure of that. Thank God for my vet who suggested YD. Now let me say it is very clearly stated by both Hills and my vet That they can't have anything other than the food. So I became completely obsessed. I made sure that I got distilled So my baby was diagnosed with a very high thyroid. In the 5's. We tried her on felimazole which her brother takes. So I became completely obsessed. I made sure that I got distilled water since I wasn't sure the iodine content in my own water: I bought special cat bowls that only open to the cat's chip. Since I have three cats, I could not have her getting into anyone else's food. It was a slight learning curve, but the cats did beautifully and now I think they prefer having their own bowls that no other cat can get into. I brought her back To the vet six weeks later and she went from 5.5 to 2.1 . She is in normal range now!!!!! I have no idea if this will last or not. I pray that it will. But I cannot say enough about this food. Thank you so much Hills for making it. It truly is saving my baby's life. I need to be very diligent about making sure that she doesn't eat anything else but other than that it's been pretty seamless. In fact the other two cats want the food as well. Apparently they all like it. I can only give it to the one with a thyroid problem and have to keep it from the other two cats. But it's great to see that they actually really like it. Anyone like me who has limited options, I'm telling you it's worth it. Worth every penny!! Give it a shot. It's a bit dry so I add distilled water to it so that there's no concern of iodine in the water. And I mix it up really well with a fork. I also give dry too. THANK YOU HILLS. … more

One Spoiled One
By Lulu on Dec 27, 2020
The canned food arrived in mostly good condition, although a few of the cans were dented. After a few days, the closet where we kept the cat food smelled very horrible, like something had died. I saw nothing in there that would cause it. The cans were still boxed, except for the one can I had taken out for starting our cat on that food. I sprayed the closet with Lysol a few times. After 2 weeks, I was sure there was something dead in the closet. After unboxing all of the canned catfood, I found that one of the dented cans had a lid that was slightly lifted up. Ugh! That was the "dead thing" that smelled so badly. Reviews made me hesitant but my cat LOVES it
By Katie on Dec 19, 2020
My cat had a horrible reaction to the pills for Hyperthyroidism so we needed a new solution. Vet started us out with the dry food and my cat ate that no problem but I asked how I can still give her treats and she said the wet food. I read reviews on this and so many people said their cat hated it/wouldn't eat leftovers etc. so I was very hesitant to spend that much on a food she won't eat so I bought a single can from Petsmart to make sure she would eat it. She devoured her little spoonful and the next day ate it right out of the fridge no heating necessary. Depends on the cat I guess but if they like it this is the perfect choice so they can still have something special on their diet. Helped my boy
By Tessa on Jan 15, 2021
Cat diagnosed with thyroid condition, had been losing weight, hyperactive, thirsty and just not himself. After 6 weeks eating this food he has put weight back on and is back to his old self. Blood test confirmed that his thyroid levels back to normal. He could not tolerate the meds, so I am grateful this food is available.

Refund Requested
By DrBetty on Dec 25, 2020
Like so many other individuals, I want a REFUND due to having to purchase large cans 5.5 cans instead of 3 ounce cans! I will NEVER purchase a Hill's RX product again! Chewy was great in getting product to me in a very fast manner but product waste and poor acceptance of the product leaves me wanting a full refund from Hill's. No wonder vet services do not offer this product in their clinics!

He Likes it!
By Elizabeth on Feb 3, 2021
I’m so happy my boy likes the thyroid care prescription food! It’s a little dense and hard to break up, but I add water and mash it up and stir well. He seems to like it more than any other food I’ve ever given him.

Hill's Rx Diet for Thyroid Care
By Glenn on Jan 2, 2021
We have had cats as pets for many many years and this is the first time any of our cats would eat the Rx cat food. Our 19.5 year old cat loves this and it is the only food she eats. We are very thankful for this food. And Chewy has been great in the ordering and delivery process. Thanks.
