Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.
Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:
Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

While this medicine is a great and easy alternative, it may not be working. I've been giving one of my cats this for a month now, brought her in for a recheck and her thyroid levels barely went down and she has still lost weight. The vet informed me that Chewy meds, compounded this way, may not be as accurate making them less effective because there's no guarantee the actual dose needed is in the amount given each time. Unfortunately I may have to resort to a local compounding pharmacy at a higher price.
I actually diagnosed my cat with thyroid problems before I saw the Vet. Then I read all the great reviews for this med and decided to try it. I went in to the vet, asked for blood work, saw the thyroid was a problem. Asked the doctor for the ointment. My cat was really really thin. I could pick him up with 2 fingers. After a few weeks of this med, he gained weight and you can feel his muscle mass has increased. He's still thinner than he was but he used to be a fatty. But he seems really healthy now! Love this stuff!
Switching to this over the pills has been SO much easier! No more fighting with a cat, or trying to wrap it up in a blanket, or getting clawed. Especially when we have a pet sitter or someone else has to give the cat his medication. I'm not sure how long one of the 9mL tubes actually lasts, but we are 45 days in and it's still just under the #4 mark. Even though it's fairly expensive up front, I know I can get at least 2 months out of one tube and that really makes it worth it. If you cat needs thyroid medication, don't bother with the pills- go straight to this gel compound!
My cat has hyperthyroidism and will not take pills. I have tried everything to get a pill inside her but to no avail. Then the vet mentioned Methimazole Compounded Transdermal and said I just have to apply it to inside of her ear. Wow! No problem now! I can't say how it is working as I have to wait for her next bloodwork. Fingers crossed!
I did not know this was to be applied to skin. I tried to put in food, but it tastes horrid. After calling Chewy I found it was to be applied to the skin. I don't think the instructions were clear about this. Hopefully I can start her medication now.
This product is terrific. My cat has been on the drug for about three years, compounded at a local drugstore in 6 syringes that last one month, and require gloves or a finger cot to apply to my cat's ears. The Chewy brand can be ordered safely in a supply that lasts more than four weeks, and comes in an applicator that is not only more accurate, but doesn't require using one's fingers to apply the ointment, decreasing the risk of medicating the owners well as the cat. Also, the price I pay Chewy for six weeks of treatment is what I paid for four weeks locally--and with autorefill, I don't even have to call when the supply is getting low. Thank you, Chewy!!!
So grateful for Chewy as the medication my beloved kitten needed came quite promptly. She's responded very nicely and is in much better health. Thx Chewy!!
I am extremely happy with the compounded medication for my cat who suffers from hyperthyroidism. The consistency is great and very easy to dose (with measured clicks of the pens). Very satisfied. Thanks so much
This medication is working just fine. But it's a little more viscous than other brands and tends to drain down in our cats ear. Then she starts shaking her head like she has water in her ear.
We have been using this for a month and the cat is doing great. Easy to apply. The cat's ears are not showing any discomfort or flaking. Takes about 2 seconds and you are done.
