Montmorillonite Clay is listed as the 6th ingredient, is this: Terramin Calcium-Montmorillonite clay? (the good stuff) or drilling mud-Montmorillonite Clay? (bad stuff)?
Answer by ChewyOct 17, 2018
Montmorillonite Clay is an ingredient in all of Instinct's food. They use Montmorillonite Clay (Hydrated Sodium Calcium Aluminosilicate) sourced from deposits in southern Utah. If you look at the chemical name for Montmorillonite Clay, you will see both sodium and calcium right at start of the chemical formula. If the given clay has a larger percentage of sodium than calcium, it is often shortened in descriptions to Sodium Montmorillonite. If the given clay has a larger percentage of calcium than sodium, it is often shortened in descriptions to Calcium Montmorillonite. The source of the natural clay that is used in their products is higher in calcium than sodium and is described as “Calcium Montmorillonite” but Instinct elects to simply describe it as Montmorillonite Clay. Montmorillonite Clay is approved by AAFCO for use as an anticaking processing aid to adsorb excess moisture and to help keep the food from clumping. Nature's Variety is committed to using high quality, safe ingredients. Their vendor tests the Montmorillonite Clay used in the diets for dioxins and it is guaranteed dioxin-free.

Does Instinct by Natures Variety use any ingriedients from China?
Answer by ChewyNov 02, 2022
Instinct sources most of their ingredients from the U.S. and turn to other locations only as needed. They are very stringent on their sourcing and have good relationships built with their vendors for quality ingredients. Instinct takes every step to source non-China ingredients where they can. They do not source any of their meat, poultry or fish from China. Their raw frozen or freeze-dried diets are also not made with any ingredients from China. Their kibble and wet diets may contain minor ingredients (vitamins, trace nutrients) sourced from China to ensure supply is guaranteed. Instinct's approved supplier has put in measures to assure food safety and traceability from a trusted supply chain.

Is there any ingredients in this dog food that comes from China? Is the fish wild or farmed? What protein percentage is derived from just fish? What is the Chondroitin and Glucosamine content in mg?
Answer by ChewyAug 02, 2021
Whenever wild-caught salmon is available, it is sourced for this diet. When not available, farm-raised Salmon from the Pacific Northwest is used to ensure the recipe is still available.Glucosamine and chondroitin are in our natural ingredients; however, instinct does not guarantee the levels except in Instinct Senior and Small Breed dog kibble formulas. 77%  of protein comes from animals and 23 % comes from vegetables and other plants.

Does this contain Taurine? For heart health?
Answer by ChewyAug 24, 2020
Taurine is found naturally within meat, with the level varying depending on the type of meat.

Love Chewys!

Chewys makes it work. If they are out of your regular order they'll still make sure your child gets food!

Healthy Dry Food Choice

Dogs love it. Helps them maintain a healthy coat. Senior dog has a limited diet and this is a good choice for him and our other dog can eat it as well.

I was very hopeful that my dog would like this product but when I put a half cup down for her a few minutes after it arrived she walked over to the dish, sniffed it, looked at me as if saying..."you don't really expect me to eat this do you?" and that was that, she has completely ignored it since. I will have to look for something else and I can't in good conscience recommend it if my little dog won't even take a second look at it.

Didn’t work for my Boxer

I gave this food a one star simply because it didn’t work for my Boxer who has problems with food allergies and yeast infections not because of the product itself. I went back to Nutrish Limited Salmon. His scratching and licking settled down almost immediately of stopping the Instinct so I know the Instinct just isn’t good for my baby.

It's a no-go

The hyper-picky dog turned up her nose at this one. And the greedy, eats everything dog, only ate it when it was the only choice at the end of the day. It has pretty clean ingredients and not too many which I was happy about. Just wish the dogs cared about that and would eat it.

Limited Ingredients—Instinct

My dog has food allergies. Had an allergy test. He needs to eat limited ingredients. Glad I tried Instinct. The salmon does not smell like typical fish. I tried other fish kibble and my dog disliked it. Excellent limited ingredients option. No soy, corn, potatoes, wheat, dairy, eggs, etc. I wish I fed my dog limited ingredients from the start. Much healthier. I narrowed down the kibble limited ingredients options to Instinct and Natural Balance.

Hard to Review a Dog Food

If my dog could talk, she’d say “This food tastes great, but it leaves me with soft poop!”

great food, all flavors agree with my pups

We've been feeding our pups Instinct Limited Turkey for years now. we recently had to order a different flavor, (salmon) due to the Turkey being out of stock. I was worried it would affect their digestion but it was not an issue. Going forward we will look to try their other flavors in order to give our pups a broader diet!
