Is this raw?

Answer by ChewyJan 17, 2021
This recipe is raw. Instinct uses High Pressure Processing (also known as HPP or Cold Pressure) on all of their frozen and freeze-dried raw recipes to ensure they are free from pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella, E. Coli, and Listeria. This is the same process used for human foods like cold-pressed juices and guacamole. They also test every batch for safety before it leaves their facilities.

Does the pork in the formula come from China. If not, where does it come from?

Answer by ChewyNov 15, 2019
The pork in this formula is sourced from the United States.

I'm slightly concerned about the content of peas and carrots, since they are not animal protein. How much of the protein is due to these ingredients? Are their negative side effects?

Answer by ChewySep 26, 2019
The guaranteed minimum percent of protein for this formula is 10.0%. The first three ingredients are meat sources and make up greater than 50% of the total ingredients in the recipe. Therefore, more protein is coming from meat than vegetables.

My cat was diagnosed with severe IBD/SCL 6 months ago. Royal Canin Hydrolyzed dry food (soy based protein) has been a life saver but my cat, who has always been strictly wet food, was constantly begging for something more to eat. She would only eat the dry food as a last resort. My vet recommended canned duck or rabbit but she wouldn’t touch the prescription versions. Even though this version of Instinct rabbit contains pork, it doesn’t trigger a flare. She finally enjoys her food again and she’s even eating her prescription dry food. It’s nice to see her pain free and gaining weight. The pate version agrees with her the best.

The only rabbit recipe our guy will eat

We have two rescues from a hoarding situation. One is ok, the other has had terrible tummy issues for more than a year. Chronic loose stools, and really foul, off smell. We’ve added inulin (flavorless, scentless soluble fiber alternative to psyllium), and that helped a lot - and we’re trying probiotics again - but we still felt a digestive food allergy might be part. However, he’s had trouble with some proteins not agreeing with him, including beef and lamb, and he doesn’t like venison, and is “meh” on duck - so we’re pretty much left with salmon and rabbit. This is the only rabbit recipe he really likes, and is happy to eat. His loose stools are way reduced, and he’s happy. That is the best we could ask for. It’s difficult because it’s so expensive, at over $100/mo. for this food, but if you can afford it and you have a cat with a wrecked microbiome, I recommend giving this a try.

Expensive but worth it.

Expensive but worth it . My cat loves rabbit. He gobbles this up and leaves the real bunnies alone.

Very popular with our kitty.

She loves it, which is a good thing since she's on a restricted diet.

Deceptive, read the fine print

My cat has refused to eat this after being presented with it multiple times. I was confused because usually she loves rabbit. I just realized it has pork in it too

My cat has refused to eat this after being presented with it multiple times. I was confused because usually she loves rabbit. I just realized it has pork in it too. It should be called "pork and rabbit", not "rabbit recipe". I usually scour the ingredients before buying, but this time was acting on a recommendation. My bad and won't happen again.
