Questions & Answers

31 Customer Questions

Is this raw?
Answer by ChewyJan 17, 2021
This recipe is raw. Instinct uses High Pressure Processing (also known as HPP or Cold Pressure) on all of their frozen and freeze-dried raw recipes to ensure they are free from pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella, E. Coli, and Listeria. This is the same process used for human foods like cold-pressed juices and guacamole. They also test every batch for safety before it leaves their facilities.

"finest ingredients from around the world". Where exactly?
Answer by ChewyJan 03, 2018
The manufacturer will source their high-quality ingredients within the United States depending on availability; however, certain ingredients will need to be outsourced. The Rabbit in this formula is sourced from France.

Is this bpa free?
Answer by ChewyAug 29, 2018
These cans are bpa free.

I'm slightly concerned about the content of peas and carrots, since they are not animal protein. How much of the protein is due to these ingredients? Are their negative side effects?
Answer by ChewySep 26, 2019
The guaranteed minimum percent of protein for this formula is 10.0%. The first three ingredients are meat sources and make up greater than 50% of the total ingredients in the recipe. Therefore, more protein is coming from meat than vegetables.

Has Fish oil. Not good for my allergic cat

I bought this for one of our cats that has serious allergies. But this has Mehedin fish oil. And I think this aggravated his allergies. Its a bit disappointing. As he really likes it! Its a nice texture. Just too bad about the fish oil. There are not many choices for cats that have allergies. If they could take out the fish oil. This might be a hit!

Not liked by our cat

I figured that we would try something different for our cat. My wife used to by the same flavors over and over. So I thought this time, I would purchase his food. Oh lord was that a mistake. We opened the can,put in his bowl and he would not go near this food at all. He would meow until we picked it up, discarded, and had to give a new dish. So this flavor and brand was not a winner.

Recipe Change?

I alternate my cats food very often and feed a variety of proteins. She loves rabbit, and in the past has devoured this food. She will not go near this recent batch. The smell is off and the texture is very rough and grainy, like sand. I assume the recipe has changed.

Tolerated well by IBD cat

I feed my IBD senior Hills z/d wet prescription food and supplement it with this since he gets tired of straight z/d sometimes. For some reason, my cat normally throws up anything with pork but this doesn't bother him.

BONES BONES BONes

This is unacceptable. My cats loved this food until I started finding more and more pieces of bones and having to sift through their meals for ten minutes before I could give it to them. These sharp bones could puncture my cat's intestines. DO BETTER. chewy thankfully gave me a full refund!

Bones, bones and more bones

The amount or inclusion at all of bone meal in pet food is another debate for another time but this is ridiculous. This is literally a choking hazard. Instinct is clearly going through something with their unannounced recipe changes, rabbit and venison are the only ones left with the old recipes. A lot of pet owners have relied on Instinct for chicken and fish free options which while more plentiful these days, are still hard to find. For the amount of money they’re charging I expect more than a potential surprise visit to the emergency vet for a lodged obstruction in their throat or a violent allergic reaction due to unannounced recipe changes. Do better Instinct.

Additional review. I too have seen a lot more bones in this food recently. Have had to remove them.

recipe changed

My cat used to love the food but lately he stopped eating it completely. there’s a ton of hard white parts in it (which I hope is bone and not plastic or plaster!!) and the color is different. Very disconcerting not to know what your pet is eating.
