Instructions
The Ultimate Stock Tank De-Icer is only designed to be plugged in when it is submerged in water. It will not turn off automatically if there is no water. Never plug the unit in unless the heating element is completely submerged in water. Otherwise, the unit will be damaged.
To use your Ultimate Stock Tank De-Icer as a floating de-icer, use it with the float ring attached. To use it as a submersible de-icer, unscrew and remove the float ring.
The temperature of the heating element will depend on the temperature of the water. When submerged in water, the heating element doesn’t feel that warm to the touch, but it is designed to keep a stock tank from freezing over when choosing the correct deicer as per out zone chart.

Although it varies based on what zone you live in (according to the zone chart) the 1000 watts can heat up to 125 gallons.
Can I use this with a metal tank.
Answer by • Nov 29, 2017
The de-icer can be secured to the edge of a galvanized stock tank, bucket or container.
Can it be put on a rubber bowl and it says don’t use an extension cord so what cord do you use to make it work then?
Answer by • Jan 09, 2018
This product is safe for all stock tanks. You must plug your Ultimate Stock Tank Deicer directly into a properly grounded electrical outlet.
I am in zone 6 and have a 100 gallon stock tank for horses. Which wattage should I choose? Also does this heater shut off when the outside temp gets above freezibg?
Answer by • Dec 26, 2019
Please click on the attached photo to determine the wattage you need. For a 100 gallon tank in zone 6, the 750 watt deicer is recommended. This is designed with internal thermostats that automatically monitor water temperature and turn the unit on and off to keep the average water temperature just above freezing. The unique technology ensures that your stock tank de-icer will only run as often as needed.
If you are buying something to use for poultry, Why buy a heated little 5 gallon bucket or a heated base when you can buy this for the same price (or less)? This thing you can put in however big of a container, tank, or tub that you want, within reasonable limits, and it is totally safe around waterfowl bills and feet. Meanwhile, the heated bases can barely do 5 gallons of water (and HAVE to be used with a metal container) or the heated buckets are usually $50-70+ just to hold 5 gallons of water which does not last long and can't be used for duck or geese to get a bath.
I really like these deicers. I have a 15 gallon rubber tub and a 30 gallon plastic tub for my ducks and geese, and the 250 watt in each tub is able to easily keep them from getting iced over. I bought one of these a year ago (was for the 30 gallon tub) and just bought a 2nd one (for the 15 gallon tub). The plastic cage on this keeps duck/goose bills and feet off of the heating element, which is super important to me. 10/10 I recommend!
Currently the only pic I have that kind of shows the deicer is the one with an upside down goose in it.

Worked great and Chewy shipped fast!
These deicers worked great during a recent winter blast in Texas. My 100 gallon troughs stayed ice free that had them, the other troughs froze so thick we struggled to break the ice. We used one in an 8 ft tank, we needed the 1500 watt but only had the 1000 watt and it still kept the tank from freezing completely. It had a thin layer of ice and open area where the deicer was floating. We tried floating bottles in the other troughs and they all froze. Thank you so much to Chewy for shipping right away! We received our deicers in time!

Tank De-icer
Wow! I put this de-icer in the metal tank and forgot to plug it in. Two days later the tank was frozen with the de-icer. I plugged it in and within 10 minutes it had melted a ring around it and let water come to surface. Within 30 minutes, enough had been melted so I could pull chucks of ice out. I have continue water trickling so the tank stays full/ Love this product.

Works well
We have the 500 watt model.
Using it floating on the water.
The cage cover would be difficult for a horse to chew or pick up. Definitely keeps the water open for horses to access.
We're in Pennsylvania and the 500 watt is adequate.
If you are in climate that is colder, I'd chose a stronger model.

Great deicer
I ordered this the night before we were expecting a major snow storm for my small koi pond as I felt the heater that was there wasnt deicing the thick layer of ice that had frozen. I asked if it could be rushed as I feared my koi wouldn’t survive with air for their gases to exit the pond. Well it arrived the next day by twelve thirty in the afternoon I ran outside and plugged it in the pond. Good news, within a few hours my pond was thawing and by the next day with eight inches of snow my pond was completely thawed and my koi were swimming around as if it were Spring. Can’t thank Chewy enough for their promptness

Don't expect it to last long
Purchased it last winter, as a replacement for my previous heater, which lasted 6 years. It worked fine, while it was working. But then I was surprised to find our tiny pond frozen, and most of our goldfish dead. It lasted half a winter last year, and now half a winter this year, and broke. Only get this if you are ok with it being a season solution. Do not rely on it for longer.

Zapped my horses!!!
I've never used this brand of deicer before, and I never will again. It has zapped my horses several times. The first day it was set up all the horses acted like it was zapping them when they tried to drink. Unplugged it, waited a few days and plugged it back in. Worked fine. Tested it several times, horses were able to drink, all seemed well. Then, after refilling the bucket with water, my horses got zapped again. Now I have to go buy a whole new heated water tub, as my horses are now afraid of the tub this heater was in.

Not this time!
I have bought this same de-icer for horse troughs for years, although from other sources. This one, however, did not make it through its second winter. Others have lasted 4 and 5 winters. Disappointing!

Regions 4-5
This mighty little de-icer is great. South of Omaha, North of Kansas City where regions 4 & 5 align. It keeps my 100 gallon trough open in -5 temps. I’d suggest a 750+ watt for northern areas, but this 500 watt does great here.
