What kind of sand do I use for tropical fish

Answer by ChewyOct 11, 2020
The Aqua Terra Aquarium & Terrarium Sand is suitable for Pond, Freshwater, Saltwater fish.

will to 20 -lb bags of live sand be enough to cover the bottom of my 150 gallons saltwater tank I already have sand but it’s old looking and I wanted to add new sand

Answer by ChewyApr 28, 2020
Use a minimum of 1 pound Bio-Activ Live Aragonite Live Sand per gallon of saltwater. Set up an appropriate filtering system and allow it to circulate. During the first month introduce no more than 1 inch of fish per 5 gallon saltwater.

can I use with African cichlids

Answer by ChewySep 16, 2020
This product is intended for saltwater aquariums only. This would not be suitable for African Cichlids, since they are freshwater fish.

Is the buffering capability what makes this substrate saltwater only? Or is there another reason it can't be used in freshwater systems?

Answer by ChewyMar 19, 2018
The sand uses Marine Autotrophic bacteria for saltwater, it may not have the same successful results in freshwater tanks.

After placing the sand in my tank and filling it with water, debris started floating in my tank, crushed leaves, roots and more things I don't know what they were. It took me 3 hours to get 95% of it removed.

Every time I added water or moved a rock or did anything to my aquarium the sand would make a sand storm. It coated everything in the tank with a coat of sand, including the tank/aquarium itself. It covered the glass and if you tried to get it off of anything in the aquarium it would cause another sand storm. It's nice soft sand, but too fine and light.

Very glad I got the larger grain size. Very beautiful sand. When I first got it I was worried that it appeared to be more of a drab gray brown color, but those worried were immediately proven unfounded once I opened the bag. Very dusty, but I literally just dumped the jugs of Nutri Seawater in without any regard for the dust I knew it would create. Cleared up in 2 days without leaving my rock work looking like it had been through a dust storm. Added an 8 pound bag of the more coarse Reef Sand over this and let the water dumping in mix it up some and they look absolutely fantastic together. Very natural look
