About Outward Hound Puzzle Toys for Dogs

Healthy Playtime Problem Solving

Did you know that 15 minutes of mental exercise can have a similar effect on your dog’s emotional well-being as 30 minutes of physical exercise? Dogs love to explore and problem solve and will use their noses and paws as tools. Each Nina Ottoson puzzle toy game is designed with your dog’s natural behaviors, senses and safety in mind.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors

Setting your dog to work on a puzzle or game helps focus his attention and energy. This mental redirection can help reduce boredom, anxiety and destructive behaviors, too. Try using puzzle toys to distract your dog from fireworks, thunderstorms and other stressful situations.

Four Levels of Play

All dogs are different. That’s why each treat puzzle toy was designed with a different level of difficulty—to please dogs of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or puzzle-solving pros. Start by choosing a level that suits your pup’s skill set and level up as he learns!

Level 1

Perfect for beginners, these puzzles help gain interest and prepare dogs for puzzles to come.

Level 2

Features added obstacles, requiring your dog to combine actions to retrieve each tasty reward.

Level 3

These advanced puzzles challenge your dog to complete several steps in order to reach the hidden treats.

Level 4

This is the hardest level and requires multiple steps and problem-solving skills to solve!

For Bonding and Training

Nina Ottosson puzzle games are a great way to build your relationship with a newly adopted dog or help a shy dog come out of his shell. You can also use puzzles to help train your dog and practice basic commands like “sit” and “stay”.

Questions & Answers

How do I know what size toy to get?

Can this be put in the dishwasher?

Answer by ChewyJul 31, 2023
This toy is designed to be hand-washed only.

Does the slide around on hardwood floors? Or can it be secured to the floor somehow?

Answer by ChewyNov 13, 2024
If you're concerned about the puzzle moving too much on hardwood floors, you can place it on a non-slip mat or a carpeted area to keep it more stable. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any built-in way to secure it to the floor, but using a non-slip rug pad underneath can help keep it in place.

Can this be taken apart for easier and more thorough cleaning?

Answer by ChewySep 27, 2024
The medium and large puzzles do not include any removable parts. The pegs on the small do come off and can be cleaned separately. To wash your dog’s DogBrick, simply remove all treats/kibble and hand wash with warm soapy water, rinse clean and dry.

It’s a great puzzle to keep my lab stimulated during these cold winter months. The base holes fit his kibble, the smaller round holes don’t quite fit his kibbles, so I am considering either splitting his kibbles or finding smaller treats to put in those holes for extra mental stimulation for him. It takes a while to dry after cleaning, I had to keep moving the parts around so it dried evenly. But overall, a great first puzzle for my dog!

Great new challenge with room to grow

Nice weight and staying while my dog pushed and explored the treat hiding places. There’s several ways to set it up, from easy to challenging. When he started to mouth/chew the knobs I just said no and he would use his nose only. You do have to supervise as I think most dogs who are chewers would start chewing on it once the treats are all discovered. Very satisfied with this toy and would recommend to others.

Good idea, gave me a baseline

I had never bought a puzzle toy for a dog before. This has levers or covers. The dog has to either nudge the flat cover off the treat hole or slide the round lever

I had never bought a puzzle toy for a dog before. This has levers or covers. The dog has to either nudge the flat cover off the treat hole or slide the round lever over to expose the treat. I started with the treat covers. The treats were dried beef liver pieces. It took him 3 minutes. Same with the sliding levers. He enjoyed it, but it was a quick challenge. They say golden retrievers are in the top 5 of intelligent dogs. Guess I'm going to have to get a tougher puzzle

I bought both large and medium

My puppy loves these puzzles. It doesn't matter if it's easy or not. I still fill these puzzles with treats for him to play with. Nina ottoson puzzles are very well

Not recommended for larger, impatient dogs.

She managed to break off 2 of the flaps the first try. After further demonstration she is doing well with it, the mistake was mine. I should have demonstrated

They enjoy it

Both dogs like this puzzle toy and they both go about it differently. Parkour uses her paws to muscle through and Lilah uses her snout. They actually don’t bark

Both of my Boston Terriers are obsessed with this puzzle. At first, I thought it was too easy because they figured it out in under a minute or two, but I tweaked it to make it more difficult per the instructions. I’d place this at a 2 or 3 difficulty level depending on the dog. What I like is that my dogs are able to get mental enrichment, especially going into the winter months when they’re not outside as much. I’ll be buying another in a level 4 to 5 next.

Fun, but pretty easy for my dog

cute but too easy for my Corgi

It took no time for my Corgi to find all the treats, so the next step was to destroy the toy. I'll stick with chew toys from now on.

not for bull terriers

this is a fun puzzle, well made, but my mini bull terriers snouts are too big and could not get the treats out :-(
