How do I get my dog used to wearing a muzzle?
Muzzles are often not introduced until the dog is a ready stressed or having a fearful reaction. When you introduce a muzzle in this stressful encounter, the dog may associate the muzzle with the unpleasant experiences.
Teaching your dog to be comfortable with a muzzle before a stressful experience can be very beneficial. By associating the muzzle with pleasant things like treats and play, you can positively impact a potentially stressful encounter. Your dog will also already be comfortable with the sensation of a muzzle, so this new experience won't add unnecessary anxiety to the situation.
Getting Your Dog Used to the Muzzle
Keep training sessions short. During the training session, you'll give your dog lots of treats and praise while he is wearing the muzzle. When the muzzle is off, take away the treats and praise. You'll build the association that the muzzle means tasty, fun rewards!
- When you introduce your dog to the muzzle, have lots of tasty treats available. You'll teach your dog the muzzle means yummy food is coming!
- Show your dog the muzzle. Let your dog interact with the muzzle by looking at it or touching it. Reward him with a treat and praise. Don't rush him; let the dog choose to approach the muzzle.
- Open the muzzle so your dog can put his nose through the nose portion. Invite your dog to put his nose through the muzzle by holding a treat on the other side. Make sure your dog is doing this at his own pace. Forcing the muzzle on his nose will likely make him fearful or uncomfortable.
- When your dog is excited to put his nose through the muzzle and get the treat, clip the neck strap closed. Continue rewarding your dog with treats and praise as he wears the muzzle. Keep the muzzle on for a few seconds.
- Remove the muzzle and take away the treats. Then put the muzzle back on and give lots of treats and praise again. Do this several times. As your dog feels more comfortable, slowly increase how long you keep the muzzle on.
- Practice this during short training sessions over several days. The more positive experiences your dog has with the muzzle the better! Add playtime while he's wearing the muzzle. This means your dog will be less stressed when he needs to be muzzled.
How do I fit the muzzle on my dog?
- To fit the nose portion of the muzzle, begin with the muzzle fully open.
- Place the mesh pane under your dog's snout.
- Wrap the sides around and across the top of the dog's snout.
- Secure the fuzzy fastener strap so the muzzle is snug enough that the dog cannot open his mouth entirely to bite. Make sure it's loose enough so the dog can still open his mouth a little to pant.
- Wrap the neck strap behind the dog's head and clip the buckle.
- Adjust the strap length so you can fit only one finger underneath the neck strap.
- Your dog should not be able to remove the muzzle from his nose if the neck strap is clipped and properly adjusted.
- Supervise your dog when he's wearing the muzzle. Don't leave the muzzle on for longer than 45 minutes during normal weather or 30 minutes during hot weather.

bad sizing
I bought this muzzle and sized my dog per the instructions and ordered a large. She is a 55 lb lab pit mix not much about her is large except her personality! But ordered the large and it is way to small for her. I can get it on her but it says there is room for panting but there is not. It looked like a torcher device and I had to remove it. Her tongue was able to stick out a very very small amount so no this is a no go for us will see if it can be returned. I recommend sizing up if you can it’s completely adjustable to make it smaller but not bigger. Quality is good just sizing bad
Great quality
This is a really nice muzzle. I has padding around the muzzle and a loose adjustment and a tight one. It also has an easy to adjust head strap. This is very high quality. It is not for small dogs like chihuahuas. I was able to trim it for my Chihuahua and it fits well
Very helpful
This was easier to put on than the last one I had. It lets my dog smell but not eat stuff on the ground.
Dissappointed
Muzzle does not fit my chihuahua. Description did not provide a way to measure for the right fit. I ordered a small but it is still much too big even though it said it was adjustable. It is only slightly adjustable.
Muzzle did not stay tight
This muzzle would not stay tight on dogs nose. It just pulled loose and dog would work off.

I have a cocker that likes to bark at the grass, this was wonderful in helping him to enjoy the outdoors and us as well :-)
Avoid the nip
My 15 pound shih tzu had a double ear infection this past May. I ordered this muzzle to avoid being bitten while doing an ear flush and giving meds to her ears. I adjusted the straps to the back of her head and once in the proper alignment the muzzle did its job. So happy Chewy sells these products.
worked until it didnt
As soon as I got this product, I was eager to put it on my dog for a test drive. Perfect fit, too! Next thing I know, he was able to slide it off under five minutes. Four out of ten at best
Dog muzzle
2nd purchase of this. First one deteriorated and then had sharp plastic shards. Ordered a different type that had more of a basket nose but wasn’t big enough to fit a GSD and no larger size available. This one is fine, adjusts easily and can be washed by hand to keep clean. Good value for the price though and the adjustable nose and head strap are useful to either stop a dog from licking without a cone of shame or from biting if worry of that is a factor.
