For best performance, the fountain pump needs to be cleaned every two weeks. When cleaning the pump, we recommend cleaning the fountain and changing the filter as well. Replace the foam filter every 1 - 2 months. Multi-pet households may need to be cleaned more frequently. The ceramic bowl and tower are top-shelf dishwasher safe. Hand wash all other fountain parts.
Steps | Pump Cleaning Instructions |
---|---|
1. | Use your nail or a tool with a small edge to remove the face plate on the end opposite the cord. Please note: the Outdoor Dog Fountain pump face plate slides out. |
2. | Pull up on the small lip to remove the teardrop-shaped stator. |
3. | Remove the impeller by pulling up from underneath it with your finger. |
4. | Clean all parts of the pump using soap and warm water with a small brush, such as a toothbrush. Completely rinse the pump, then reassemble. |
If hard water is an issue where you live, you may see white mineral deposits inside the housing and inside the pump. These mineral deposits may eventually prevent the impeller from turning properly. To avoid having to replace the pump:
The pump is not working or the water is not flowing as much as it used to.
The fountain is too loud.
There are black particles in the bowl. This is loose granulated carbon dust from the filter and is completely harmless for your pet to drink. Rinse the filter in cold water before placing it in the fountain to prevent this.
The fountain feels slimy.
The adapter is warm to the touch. Unplug the fountain and plug it into a surge protector.
The fountain is leaking.
The fountain seems dirty even after cleaning. If there is a white chalky substance in the fountain, your fountain may have a mineral deposit build-up from hard water. To remove these deposits, clean the fountain parts with an 80% water, 20% vinegar solution. Rinse all parts thoroughly afterwards. Use filtered or purified water instead of hard tap water to prevent this.

Never rinse the filter in soap. Washing your filter will allow the soap to seep into the pores and this cannot be removed, making the filter unusable and unsafe for your pet.
Do I need to use a filter with the fountain? The filter is not required for normal operation of the fountain, but it does significantly improve the overall cleanliness and taste of the water for your pets. The filter removes bad tastes and odors to improve the taste of the water and catches hair and small particles to keep the water cleaner.
Filters are still helpful even if you use filtered water in the fountain. The activated carbon continuously cleans water as it flows through the filter. The pre-filter protects the pump from dirt, fur, drool, and debris.
How do I get my pets to drink from the fountain? Pets, especially cats, can be a little timid with the fountains at first. This is a new object added to their environment, so give your pet enough time to get used to the fountain at their own pace. This time frame will usually only take a few days, and it is very rare that a pet will refuse to use the product entirely. If your pet prefers to drink running water from the faucet or shower, she will probably get used to the fountain very quickly. Here are a few tips to help transition your pet:
How do the filters work? The activated carbon filter removes bad tastes and odors from the water and catches large particles and debris from re-circulating back into the water. The filters do not purify the water. Change them every 2-4 weeks, depending on how many pets use the fountain, to keep the fountain water fresh and clean.
How often should I change the filter? The activated carbon filter should be changed every 2-4 weeks, depending on the number of pets using the fountain. If you have more pets or notice more debris, a slimy feel, or decreased water flow in your fountain, you should clean it more often. Pre-filters can usually be changed less frequently.
What are the filters made of? These filters are similar to filters used in fish tanks. They are safe to use with your pet’s drinking water. The organic activated carbon used in the filters is made of coconut shells.
What’s the difference between the regular carbon filters and the premium filters? Once the filter has been used, the activated carbon tends to settle in the bottom of the pouch. The premium filters have 6 smaller pouches, rather than the 2 in the original filters, so the carbon is spread out more evenly for better filtration quality.
Why do I need to change the filters? Over time, debris gets stuck in the outer fabric of the filter, making it more difficult for the water to pass through it. The inner part of the filter contains granulated carbon with hundreds or thousands of microscopic holes, which bind to impurities in the water that cause bad tastes and smells. This binding prevents impurities them from returning to the water. Eventually, the holes become clogged and can no longer remove impurities.
Is the plastic in your fountains BPA-free? Yes. All of our plastic fountains and plastic parts are BPA-free, including cords, pumps, and filter housing.

I have bought a few Drinkwell fountains in the past and have always been impressed with the design and durability of them. I really like the different drinking levels and options since I have multiple cats and they all have their preferences. I also think it looks pretty good in my home. The one thing I wish would be improved is the connection between the pump and the electrical cord and the water channel. I find it a little complicated but that may just be me. I have had this fountain for well over a month now so this is not an off the cuff review.
I bought one about a year ago for my 2 cats (young adult cat and a senior cat) hoping to encourage more water consumption for a healthier life. Neither had ever had a drinking fountain before. The cats absolutely loved it, and preferred it to just a regular bowl of water. I really wish I'd bought this fountain earlier in my senior cat's life because this made him so happy. My senior cat recently passed away at 16yrs, and I've since adopted a kitten and another young adult - so now I'm up to 3 cats. I decided to add a second fountain in another room. Even the new cats love the fountains. It's takes a couple days to get used to the flowing water sound, but it's actually quite relaxing. The sound is very similar to a fish aquarium. I ordered about a years worth of replacement filters (there are 2 filters). It's nice to have the filters already on hand for when I clean the fountains. I clean and replace the filters about twice a month, but you may be able to go longer in-between replacements. The cleaning is actually quite easy. I do recommend getting a cleaning brush kit, but I think a toothbrush could work too.
Love the weight of this fountain, it cannot be easily tipped over. Sound was soothing but not too loud. My only complaint is that I bought this for my medium sized blind dog so he could find the water but he would not drink out of it because the center column is in the center. The drinking area was not big enough to get his face down and into the bowl. I wish they could off set the column and make bottom bowl bigger so my dog can get his head down to drink comfortably. Charcoal filter needed A LOT of rinsing, several times before it would stop leaving residue in the bowl. I would definitley recommend for small dogs or cats.
I got this for a blind peahen who navigates to her water by sound. I wanted a ceramic waterer to make it too heavy for her to simply tip the thing if she stepped on it, and this sadly isn't heavy enough. I do still fear it would tip but peafowl are not small birds so that was a shot in the dark. However I hear the water run and not the pump! It also holds plenty of water and has kept it clean despite her kicking in feathers.
My elder dog likes it. My small granddog uses it. Now, I need my cat to get on board. SHE was the one I thought would lean towards the moving water fountain, first. I love the sound. The color and shape ceramic bowl, is aesthetically pleasing. Easy to clean.
I really like this water basin. Kitty loves drink from it. He went to it right away. It keeps his water fresh and I think he is drinking more water. Only issue it is very noisy to the point I am looking to modify it with stones or something to subdue the trickle of water.
I bought this unit believing the weight of this one would prevent my cat from disassembling it. This one also is subjected to the center piece being pulled out of the dish, and the pump then pumping all the water over the side and onto the floor. Additionally, the shape of the spout on the center piece causes the water to drop into the water below, causing a constant babbling brook sound If they shortened the spouts to allow the water to flow instead of drop, and some form of locking the center piece in place,, this would be a much better product.
Looks good, works well, but it sounds like there's a constant leak in the house. It's not even an ambient, background sort of trickle--this is a full-blown stream. Even if I could get used to it, only 1 out of 2 cats will go near it.
Good quality and nice looking. Great size for cat or small dog. It is loud though. Not as quiet as some fountains I have had in the past.
The Drinkwell Pagoda Fountain is perfect for our Maine Coon cat as he loves running water. I owned the same fountain in white 7 years ago but dropped & broke it while cleaning it. It was a quite perfect fountain. I purchased the Himalayan Blue & absolutely love the color! The fountain & pump are easy to maintain. We clean the fountain with vinegar & the pump we clean with a soapy toothbrush. It is also easy to put back together. The motor is quite & creates a good flow. We noticed a huge difference in the new fountain. The pagoda tower is not as wide at the base & does not fill the depressed area outline in the center bottom. In our first fountain the water ran out the side spouts hitting the wider tower base sides with water flowing quietly & smoothly into the base bowl. The new fountain tower is narrower at the base so the water coming out the spouts does not hit the sides of the tower so the water drops directly into the bowl below causing a loud splashing sound. Just Too Loud! I’d give a 5-Star rating if it wasn’t so loud.
