I am on my second dog and have been using this same product for over 10 years. With my first dog I did use the fake grass. I bought two do I could clean once a week and prevent any odor, but when I got my new puppy (now 1 1/2 years) I didn't start him out using the grass. I live in an apartment and this is the only place he goes potty. I potty him before we go anywhere and then again when we return home. I go camping and pack the unit with me. I visit my daughter (who has a yard), and put the unit on her deck. My dog will always return to her deck to pee even tho he is playing in the yard. I empty the tray daily and pour liquid in toilet, rinse out the tray, and return it to the unit. I wipe down the unit top with a Clorox wipe daily too and I am done. EASY! Even tho I do empty the plastic tray daily, I do use a new insert tray and powder when camping and then just toss it in the garbage before leaving campground. Makes that easy too. As I stated in the beginning I have used this same unit for over 10 years, with two separate dogs, on the deck of an apartment, camping, and while visiting friends, and unit is in perfect condition. If you keep the unit clean you will definitely get your moneys worth. To keep this unit in good condition I have built a little enclosure in the winter time to keep rain and snow clear of unit too and prevent drawer from filling up too fast.
