FAQ

What is compounding?

Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.

Why do some pets need compounded drugs?

Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:

  • Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
  • Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
  • Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.

Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

How do I order my pet's prescription medications?

Create or sign into your Chewy account.

  1. Find the item(s) you wish to order and add your item(s) to your cart.

  2. At Checkout, enter your Pet and Veterinarian information.

  3. Select whether you want Chewy to contact your Veterinarian or if you will be mailing the prescription to us.

  4. Select a saved shipping address or add a new address.

  5. Select or enter your preferred payment method.

  6. Review and select Place Order to complete your order.

Do I need to have a prescription on hand before I order a prescription item?

It is not required to have a written prescription on hand when you place your order, but Chewy Pharmacy must have a patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian on file before it can dispense a medication. At checkout, simply select: I want Chewy to contact my vet, and we will contact your veterinarian on your behalf to get your pets prescription. If you prefer and have a written prescription when you place your order, you can mail it to: Chewy Pharmacy, 3621 Fern Valley Rd, Louisville, KY 40219. Mailing in a prescription will likely lead to longer ship times.

Is Chewy Compounding Pharmacy licensed or otherwise verified?

Chewy Compounding Pharmacy is licensed in its resident state of Kentucky and each state into which we ship compounded medications. Chewy Compounding Pharmacy has achieved PCAB Accreditation, so you can be assured that you have selected a pharmacy that is committed to meeting national quality standards.

How and where does Chewy source the ingredients for compounding?

We source all our compounding ingredients from FDA registered manufacturers and distributors.

Do prescription medications require authorization from my veterinarian?

Yes. Chewy Pharmacy can only dispense medication with a valid, patient-specific prescription from a licensed veterinarian.

Will you contact my veterinarian directly to approve my prescription medication?

Yes. If you have selected for us to contact your veterinarian, we will contact them to obtain a valid, patient-specific prescription.

How long does it take to process my prescription after the pharmacy receives it?

Prescriptions are typically processed by the pharmacy within 24-48 hours after receipt of a valid prescription form the veterinarian.

Can I set up auto refills for medications that treat a chronic condition?

Yes. If you have valid refills on file with Chewy Pharmacy, you can set up an Autoship for medications.

    Long Term Solution

By Pimobendan on Jan 18, 2022

Our dog was prescribed Pimobendan. We did not realize it would be for life. after several expensive refills we looked for alternatives. The dose was difficult to find. Chewy had the correct dose, getting it filled was easy and saved us money. The auto ship is a great way to make sure we don't run out at a holiday.

    Process is VERY difficult

By ElmosMom on Dec 23, 2021

This took a couple of months and trips to my vet to get right. I would get direction from someone at chewy that turned out to be wrong and delayed the process. I have no complaints about my dog food or this drug but the process to get the right assistance for RX needs to be figured out.

    Thankful for Chewy

By Coco on Jan 8, 2022

My 19 year old Chihuahua has been on this for a year since we were unable to get Vetmedin due to manufacture shortage, If it weren’t for Chewy having this product available she would have passed away. She’s had CHF since 2017.

So lucky that Chewy is compounding this!

By Sara on Aug 4, 2021

My 15+ year old Labrador is doing really well on this med. She suffers from a heart condition, and has a few other issues, however she is happy and still living a great life. The stress of tying to find Vetmedin, as well as the cost, was so difficult. I couldn't understand why there wasn't a generic of Vetmedin, since the manufacturer couldn't even supply the pets that were in constant need of the medication. The rationing and waitlists were out of control So happy that Chewy is compounding it, actually it is a life saver.

    This is Best

By ISaraTex on Jul 11, 2021

I was truly surprised by the negative reviews; perhaps Chewy found a better manufacturer? What I can tell you is we tried this generic after continual difficulty locating the brand Vetmedin, made in Mexico. My vet said their paperwork was messed up with the Mexican govt. Huh??? Not my kind of biz; I’m trusting you with my best friend’s life!!! Our 16 yr old Dorkie wakes us up early, coughing bad, Vetmedin helped, but never lasted the full 12 hours, coughing 6am and 6 pm, everyday. When the Vetmedin wasn’t available, I tried this generic. My husband and I were shocked at how much BETTER it works. NO COUGHING, zero, ever!!! It also comes in more dose sizes, too, so we no longer have to break I was truly surprised by the negative reviews; perhaps Chewy found a better manufacturer? There is no generic pimobendan

By Tamara on Jul 6, 2021

People are making false claims that this is a knockoff it isn't. There is no such think as generic pimobendan/vetramin To the other reviewer that said her dog wouldn't eat. It's a known side effect. I cook for my dog now and he eats fine it also improved over time. or your vet can prescribe an appetite stimulate. This drug is somewhat of a miracle drug for DCM and other heart issues. Dogs can sometimes survive several years vs a couple months before. I just didn't want people to get discouraged from some of the reviews. It's a lifesaver.

    Rapid decline

By Regret on Jun 23, 2021

After taking these my dog rapidly declined. He no longer wants to eat or go for walks. Breathing seems shallow. Not looking good at all. Wish I had NEVER given these to him.
