Answer by LisaNov 29, 2025
It is not vegetarian, it contains hydrolyzed chicken as well as hydrolyzed soy.

What is this food consistency Is a stew or paste

Answer by EricNov 21, 2025
Very dense paste.

Each can seems to have one or two black dots. Could it be mold?

Answer by ChewyFeb 25, 2021
The tiny black dots do occur in a variety of foods. It's a reaction of 2 of the minerals, sulfur and copper, that react in high heat during the canning process. The heat during the canning process is to ensure the meat is safe to eat, and during this process, the sulfur and copper react which creates black specks. It is safe for your pet to eat the food.

My dog was recently diagnosed with pancreatitis and put on the Purina Pro Plan HA diet. Given how pricey this is and how I am trying everything in my power to make sure he recovers, I find this frustrating. I open a can and upon smashing it up, I find bits of mold. I read the reviews and realize this is an ongoing problem. I will be switching to a different brand. I love Chewy, they are accommodating and were able to refund me and give me some recommendations. Shame on Purina. Do better. Look at pictures for reference.

I use small slices of this food, refrigerated, to entice my small senior dog to eat the kibble brand of this same food, which is hard and large for her to eat. I have to break up the larger kibbles with a hammer! then I add water to soften it a bit with the wet version dog food on top of it. She likes the wet dog food, but I know she needs something to chew as well. We are senior citizens, and the cost of even just the canned version is horribly expensive for us to afford. That said, the combination of both wet and broken-up dry food is beginning to show promise in helping her to stop licking and chewing the undersides of her paws, when numerous vet visits in the past and prescribed meds in the thousands of dollars have failed.

Oscar does very well tolerating the Purina Pro Hydrolyzed Chicken canned dog food that I order from Chewy. I have never had a problem until this last order. I opened a can and it was mostly all liquid and what little bit of food was in the can was all mush. So I ended up opening 9 more and the results were the same. I only had 2 cans that I dared to feed my fur baby. I called Chewy and you guys went above and beyond. You sent me a rush replacement ( which I got in 2 days ) and did not charge me anything. I did not call for you for you to cover my dog food but you insisted on doing so. You are an excellent company and I will be ordering more from you soon. just wanted to let you know that the food wasn’t good and I couldn’t feed it to my dog. Thank you Chewy for being so helpful, kind and supportive to Oscar and I.

Good choice for hydrolyzed food

My dog can only eat hydrolyzed food, so our choices are limited. This is one of her two favorites. Definitely worth trying if you need hydrolyzed food for your fur

For 3-4 autoships in a row, there was mold in the cans. Explained his diarrhea which cleared up once we switched. We got our money back. Feeding your dog mold is not good for them. I see at least 7 other reviews stating the same thing. At what point do they do a good quality control on their process? I see also that Chewy says in the answers that it is not mold... I don't care to do a science experiment on my dog to find out.

When your Veterinarian suggests a prescription diet, all sorts of thoughts crowd in. Will it work to improve his health? Will he eat it? We began the special meals journey with another brand. Pup loved the food and his health improved and returned to normal. Chewy sent us a new Case of food each month, several years passed - mealtimes went great until the recipe for that brand suddenly changed. The pup had been such an eager eater! I was surprised to set his bowl down and see him sniff it, and back away! He wouldn't go near his dinner! Thinking there was a problem with that shipment, since he had always eaten the food eagerly, I contacted Chewy and they were kind enough to allow me to return the entire Case of food, and they shipped a new Case to me immediately - - - unfortunately it produced the same result: I opened the first can, Pup sniffed the food and stepped away from his untouched bowl. I came to the Reviews here, read several from pet parents like myself who were feeding that company's prescription diet, and suddenly, their pets would not go near it. I didn't know what I was going to DO! Thank goodness THIS OTHER COMPANY was also making up the special ingredients as a prescription diet: which I tried immediately, AND HE LOVES IT !! We now have Chewy once again sending the prescription food to us on a regular schedule! Thank you, Chewy, for working with us on this life-changing diet item! It is always a comfort to know that Chewy is very customer orientated and always ready to work with the customers to solve any difficulty and help our pets live their best lives!
