Questions & Answers

If my dog is allergic to chicken can I still get the chicken flavor?
Answer by ChewyAug 05, 2019
Since this dog food contains Hydrolyzed Chicken Liver and Hydrolized Chicken, it is not recommended to feed to dogs with allergies or an intolerance to chicken. Each pet is unique so we encourage you to seek professional guidance to select the best products along with their current health.

I thought garlic was supposed to be bad for dogs. Why does this formula contain garlic oil?
Answer by ChewyNov 18, 2018
Many people believe that garlic is harmful to dogs, and in large, concentrated doses this can be true. However, in the proportions that we use, it is highly beneficial to heart health, acts as a natural flea repellent, an antioxidant and anti-bacterial ingredient. Just like with humans, many things are healthy (and indeed necessary) in small doses but potentially harmful in large, concentrated doses.

Is a prescription needed to order this food?
Answer by ChewyApr 04, 2023
This recipe requires a veterinarian approval.

Purina pro plan HA (Hydrolyzed) dry food

Sophie is absolutely in love with this brand of her special (and mandatory) dry food! She had been on a similar type of food but a different brand, and our vet recommended Purina brand because it is more specialized for Sophie’s medical condition. My 10 year old, arthritic Lab acted like a puppy when the bag was opened and she had her first taste. We even use it as treats when she does something good. We also use the same type canned wet food to put her medication in and she is now always compliant with meds!

Not Going as Planned

The vet put my 4 year old dachshund on this to eliminate protein allergies and to help his GI. He loves this food. However, since he's been taking it, he's now on antacids twice daily for gut upset while trying to acclimate to the food. It's been a month. He never had red skin, hair loss or any of the things you all are mentioning. His stomach hurts everyday. I don't know if it's the chicken or what. But he never had this before. I'm so confused. He also throws up on occasion. I don't know what's going on except this food makes his stomach rumble, bloat and require medication even though he absolutely loves the taste!

Unsure.

Harley Quinn (STAFFY) loves the food. But like others I’ve read, Harley Quinn’s poop has also become VERY tiny and in TINY amounts. This is vet recommended food for a medical issue HQ has and I had hopes it would help, but I cannot risk it causing another. I’m terrified it will lead to constipation. So I have to stop the food. Luckily I just swapped her to this and will unfortunately need to swap back to Royal Canin WP Moderate Calorie -

HA Works and Dog Loves Diet

Our 13 y.o. Aussie has a sensitive gut and other digestive issues. We have tried high-end and low-end, limited ingredient and grain-free, canned and dry, even home made. Finally, at our specialist's recommendation, we tried Purina Pro Plan Hydrolyzed HA, both canned and dry. Luna loves the new food. The symptoms of reflux have subsided, her stool is normal and she is more energetic. Very satisfied with this diet. Highly recommend.

Addysaurus approves!

Our vet prescribed this for our 15 month old Aussiedor while we try to isolate her food allergies. I was fully prepared for her to hate it, thinking how good can ground of vitamins be? WRONG. She absolutely loves this food and begs for more. While I’m hoping it’s not a long term necessity, I might be okay with it given how tasty it apparently is!

Have to use this

I gave this a middle star because there is nothing wrong with the food.....My shepherd just HATES THIS chicken flavored food. His vet put him on this due to chronic itching that apoquel did not help. He smelled awful. We put him on this and he ate it at first. It smells like corn pops. The third month on this.....he will eventually eat this because he is given NOTHING else, but he leaves probably half in his dish each feeding....so he might be eating 2 cups a day, which is not good. He is hungry because he is now raiding the garbage which he never did before. I pour the food into his dish and he just walks away Has it helped his condition.....not really.. i am now giving him Benadryl at night and apoquel in the morning, but he still itches and still smells a bit funky. But, it is allergy time...so who knows. His poops however are small and not as smelly. Before they were like plops of horse poop This is his third month on this stuff....will check with the vet to see if we should continue

Health necessity for my dog.

My dog has Immune Mediated Poly Arthritis. Her internal med. vet prescribed this to decrease her vomiting. Unbelievable response. She hasn’t vomited since she started eating this. And she loves it! It has been a game changer.

causes itching

Transitioning my dog from another hydrolyzed food to purina hydrolyzed food. He’s been on the purina for 8-9 days. It’s really making him itch. I should not have changed to this food.
