FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

About Royal Canin Veterinary Diets - Dermatological Line

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Can Food Help My Itchy Dog?

Scratching, biting and rubbing are signs of what is happening under your dog's coat. Skin issues in dogs can be due to food sensitivities and environmental irritants.

About Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are reactions to normally harmless proteins in the diet and can occur with a dog of any age. A food sensitivity is determined by a food elimination trial which is performed under the supervision of a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may choose a diet that contains hydrolyzed proteins (ones that have already been partially broken down) or novel proteins (ones that your pet is unlikely to have been exposed to).

About Food Sensitivities

Signs of Food Sensitivity

Sensitivities to the proteins in your dog's food or environmental irritants can result in a variety of clinical signs and only your veterinarian can determine if a veterinary-exclusive diet is appropriate for your pet. If a diet change is recommended, for best results, it is very important to feed only that food while strictly adhering to your veterinarian's feeding directions.

What About Enviromental Irritants

What About Enviromental Irritants

Like you, your dog can have sensitivities to certain things in the environment such as pollens, house dust or even fleas. Your veterinarian may recommend a diet that contains optimal amounts of vitamins and nutrients which helps reinforce your dog's skin barrier.

We have a broad-range of Dermatologic formulas for pets with food sensitives and skin issues. Talk to your veterinarian about the right formula for your pet.

My dog liked it when it was available

By Brett on Jan 15, 2022

I can't recommend it because it's not available. Vet prescribed it due to protein allergies (Boxer Colitis). My boy loved it and regained his health. Unfortunately, Royal Canin lost their ability to supply market demand for this and many other foods we were buying. We switched to another brand that he also loves, and is available.

    Amazing food!

By Sarah on Oct 31, 2021

I was so grateful to have stumbled upon this food. My pitbull Rosie not only loves it and wakes me up to feed it to her, but it has also allowed her to get more carbs and vitamins in her diet as we do just the plain hp dry food at night! I am seeing amazing improvements in her allergies, less itching and scratching, and hopefully someday this food (along with CBD and Colloidal Silver) will help get her off of Apoquel some day! I gotta say… It’s a lot of money taking care of a dog with such high allergy demands at 30-years-old! She’s only 4-5 (we don’t know because we rescued her) but has always been a scratcher. Thank goodness for Royal Canin. If you’re questioning whether their diets are right I was so grateful to have stumbled upon this food. This food has saved me hundreds in vet bills monthly, and I’ll happily pay a hundred or 2 every few months instead for good food. It’s saved her from constant antibiotic treatment. I’m glad this food has improved my dog’s quality of life! … more

    Great limited diet alternative

By cyndita on Jan 1, 2022

Got this for my picky eater with food allergies - he seems to like it, as an alternative to the “PR” rabbit formula he usually gets (also good). Would recommend giving it a try, if your dog likes fish & doesn’t have any sensitivity to fish proteins.

Do not depend on Royal Canin, your dog will suffe

    By Diane12780 on Nov 20, 2021

My dog did very well on Royal Canaan selected Pro Tien canned dog food when I was able to get it. The problem is that it is no longer available and Royal Canaan does not appear to be doing anything about the problem. The company as a whole clearly doesn’t place a priority on the dogs who have become dependent on them for their health. Find another selected protein dog food so that your dog will get what they need when they need it. Very unreliable company.

    Great option

By Brianna on Oct 10, 2021

My dog has IBD and food allergies, with the back order of the potato and venison I had to find an alternative. Luckily her internal medicine doctor recommended this flavor as he said he sees great results with this one. She absolutely loves this food and comes running every time I open the can. I am beyond grateful that I was able to find Chewy having some also!!

    Substitute dog food a success!

By Gladys on Sep 21, 2021

Because my dog’s regular wet food, the Royal Canine Vet RX Diet PV was not available, the customer service representative searched for an alternative. She was very through and we discussed different choices finally deciding on the same brand but the PW version instead of the PV. I am mixing the two in order to get his GI tract adjusted gradually and he is liking his new food. I am grateful to the customer service representative for her help and patience.

    Dogs love it!

By Mads on Jul 1, 2021

One of my dogs has been on the kibble version of this food for years now for allergies. The can food was used daily to give my dogs their meds. I recently had to switch to all can food. My dog having stomach issues from eating kibble too fast and then throwing up. The can food will be more expensive but her stomach is doing better with it. Fast delivery from Chewy.
