Frequently Asked Questions about Seresto
How can I ensure the Seresto® collar I purchased is authentic?
Chewy is an authorized retailer of Seresto® products, which means the products are directly from Elanco, the maker of Seresto®. If you would like to verify the legitimacy of your collar, call Elanco’s customer care team at 1-800-255-6826.
It's crucial to buy Seresto® products from reputable retailers like Chewy to guarantee authenticity and effectiveness. Purchasing from these trusted sources helps ensure that you’re getting a genuine Seresto® collar that will perform as expected, offering reliable protection for your pet.
How do Seresto® collars work?
The Seresto® collar employs a patented polymer matrix to distribute its active ingredients across your pet’s skin, containing:
• Imidacloprid: This powerful ingredient has been used for many years to effectively control flea infestations.
• Flumethrin: Known for its ability to kill and repel ticks, flumethrin complements imidacloprid.
• Combined Action: Together, imidacloprid and flumethrin offer a unique, dual-action defense against both fleas and ticks, unlike any other product on the market.
This combination ensures comprehensive protection for your pet, giving you peace of mind.
What is sustained release technology?
Seresto® collars utilize advanced sustained release technology, similar to monthly topical treatments. The active ingredients are gradually released in low concentrations from the collar and spread over your pet’s skin and coat. This continuous release maintains protection for up to 8 months. The collar ensures a fresh supply of active ingredients over time, making it uniquely long-lasting compared to other flea and tick collars.
Can I bathe my pet with the Seresto® collar on? What about swimming?
Seresto is water-resistant† and remains effective following a shampoo treatment, swimming or after exposure to rain or sunlight. Under normal conditions, effectiveness lasts for 8 months. To maintain an 8-month duration, dogs must not be bathed more than once per month. There is no need to remove the collar for bathing. Please use a gentle, soap-free pet shampoo.
†For dogs that swim once a month or more, the control duration is reduced to five months for flea control and reduced to seven months for tick control.
How do I apply the Seresto® collar on my pet?
1. Remove the collar from its packaging.
2. Unroll the collar and remove any small plastic connectors inside the collar to avoid residue.
3. Thread the end of the collar through the buckle and loops.
4. Adjust the collar around your pet’s neck until it fits comfortably.
5. Ensure two fingers can fit beneath the collar and your pet’s neck to avoid tightness. Trim any collar length that extends more than an inch beyond the loops. For growing pets, leave additional length for future adjustments.
6. Periodically check and adjust the fit as needed, particularly for growing pets.
Do Seresto® collars expire?
The EPA does not require an expiration date on the packaging for Seresto® collars. Nonetheless, it is important to store the collar in its original packaging and follow the storage instructions on the label to ensure maximum effectiveness over time.
How do I store and dispose of Seresto?
Do not contaminate water, food or feed by storage or disposal. Storage: Store in the original unopened container in a cool, dry place that is inaccessible to children. Disposal: The outer container may be recycled. Dispose of pouch and expired collar in trash.
Why do I need to treat my pet for fleas and ticks all year-round?
Even during colder months, fleas and ticks can live and multiply indoors, taking advantage of warm environments like homes, garages, or barns. This allows them to be active year-round, posing a risk to indoor and outdoor pets.
My pet doesn’t go outside very much. Is my pet at risk for flea and tick infestations?
Yes, a common misconception about indoor pets is that they are not at risk for fleas and ticks. Fleas and ticks can be brought into the home from shoes, clothing and other pets. Seresto® collars help prevent infestations before they start.
I did not see the answer to my question. Where can I find more information?
