Learn More About Seresto From Our Team of Experts

Important Information

Fleas rise to the top of your pet's coat as they die, so consider it a triumph if you start seeing more fleas at first, after treating your pet. If you’re still seeing fleas after application, it may be because your pet has picked up new fleas from the environment, which may include other pets, surfaces and outdoor areas. It may take up to 30 days to break the entire flea life cycle. Additionally, you should also treat sources of new fleas (i.e., carpet, yard, etc.) to ensure complete flea control.

For dogs with longer hair, like a chow or Bernese Mountain Dog, does this need to touch skin or will it still work on top of thick/long hair?

Answer by VivianDec 19, 2023
We didn’t need to the first time. Second time around it stopped working so we shaved our long hair dog around collar. Can’t really see it much with the rest of the hair.

can the collar be replaced due to being chewed off

Answer by NoahFeb 06, 2025
Yes. The collar doesn't store up medicine or anything. It's constantly being released. As soon as the collar is off the dog, the protection quickly starts to fail. You will not OD your dog if you immediately buy a new identical collar to replace the old removed one. You shouldn't however switch to a different style or brand the same day the collar is removed. Since there is still some remaining medicine from the old collar. Contact the manufacturer for more details. They are pretty decent at calling you back. I'm not a vet or representative so if unsure it's still always best to call customer service.

How do you loosen a collar that has become to tight

Answer by ChewyDec 19, 2018
Seresto is designed with a safety release mechanism. A hard pull causes the ratchet-release mechanism to allow a widening of the collar.

Does this collar kill mites too?

Answer by ChewyMar 12, 2024
This collar is intended to protect from fleas, ticks, and lice.

Soresto has gotten worse and worse with their product. I bought these collars and every year they seemed to of worked good, but this past year they weren’t so great, but I gave them another try and purchased several for all my cats and my dog, and they have not worked at all, I’m very disappointed with this product and won’t buy them again. 2 of my animals have gotten sores on their neck from them which I had to take them to our vet for treatment. This will be the last time I’ll try them.

These collars are supposed to last 7-8 months. After 6 months, we found some fleas on my lab so we gave him a flea bath and I ordered him a new collar earlier than it was due. We put the new collar on Thursday and had found his belly covered in fleas by Sunday morning. We live near a wooded area and never had this issue with seresto before. After doing research, it turns out there’s a new owner. This is not the same product as previously purchased.

Our older dog suffers from seizures so this is a much safer option according to her vet. It works great! We have a wooded place with LOTS of ticks around and we haven't been finding any. We switched our other dog to this option now too in hopes of protecting him from fleas and tick born illnesses without using injections that can cause irreversible health problems. Neither lab has shown any issues of having them on their neck/skin. I did learn: once on, do not take it off for baths or swimming. I'm not clear how a short stint in the water without it can reduce it's effectiveness but it does.

My girls have had their Seresto collars on for one week and I haven’t noticed anything unusual; no hair loss or scratching. My girls do have lots of hair but they have not been scratching. They don’t have a lot of exposure to ticks and I’ve never seen any fleas so hopefully that trend will continue. Nexgard-what they’ve been on is so expensive i was glad to try something else. This is a big expense up front but in the long run is quite economical.

Super effective without the monthly applications!

Hated the topicals in their nasty residue. Hated the thoughts of the chemicals soaking into their skin (irritating and sometimes causing reactions of hair loss) monthly. Hated the chewables and putting more chemicals into their body monthly. Totally hated the cost of both! Lucas wore the Seresto collar two summers now. No fleas...no ticks. At the end of the season, because the color last eight months, I roll it up and put it in a freezer Ziploc baggie placing it in the freezer during the winter months. When it's time to start being concerned about fleas and ticks again I pulled it back out completed the eight months with no problems. At the end of eight months, I didn't see any reason to replace it, but I did anyway, because the package said to. It doesn't matter if it gets in the rain or if he gets in water with it on it's highly effective. I wish I had known about it sooner. Just follow the directions. There is a video to helps with fitting.

My dog Buddy and Vernon have used these for a few years. Buddy developed bone cancer where the collar touch his neck/shoulder. I read up if the collar when he got sick and read some pretty horrifying stories. I thought these collars were safer than oral flea and tick meds. They are so toxic. I feel so bad that I forced both my dogs to wear them.

I read reviews prior to repurchase. Collar is not the same. It is more powdery, it doesnt fit correctly and there are no reflectors. Elanco making Soresto collars, now, doesn't seem to be the same quality. That being said. I will still purchase as it is the most economical option for flea/tick protection. However, Elanco has most definitely changed the composition of how Bayer made Soresto collars.

Had used Frontline for years and 12 years ago lost my BC mix to Lyme disease. Frontline stopped working on ticks. Next 2 dogs have been wearing Seresto collars for last 11 years. My vet likes Nexguard but Flynn experienced seizures as a puppy so we decided on Seresto. We live on a Pennsylvania farm in prime tick country so Seresto has been put to the test.

I put a Seresto collar on my dog, and within just four days he started having seizure-like episodes and muscle twitching. I was shocked, because I trusted this product was safe it’s sold everywhere and heavily pushed by vets. But after it happened, I did my own research and found out I’m far from alone. There are thousands of reports of dogs experiencing seizures, tremors, and even worse after wearing this collar. The fact that these collars are still on the market with over 30 million sold every year is disturbing. The EPA regulates these products, not the FDA, and despite all the complaints, they continue to allow them to be sold. It’s hard not to see this as another example of how profit is prioritized over safety. Pet owners deserve better. Don’t be fooled just because a vet or store recommends it. Many vets are just repeating what they’re told to say by the manufacturers, and the truth is, this collar is risky. Do not gamble with your pet’s health there are safer flea and tick prevention options out there.
