Spironolactone is a prescription diuretic used to treat congestive heart failure and fluid accumulation in the abdomen. It works to lessen tissue fluids without a corresponding loss of potassium. Easy to administer as a tablet, hidden in a pill pocket as a treat. Customers may receive this drug under the name Aldactone.
UsesUsed to manage symptoms associated with hypertension (high blood pressure), heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy, kidney disease and other types of heart diseases.
Possible Side EffectsPlease contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice any of the following reactions: dehydration with excessive thirst and decreased urine production or electrolyte imbalances (e.g., high potassium and low sodium), often with weakness, stumbling, lack of energy, vomiting or diarrhea.
Other side effects, like an allergic reaction, are also possible. Contact your vet at once if your pet is acting ill in any way after taking this medication.
Drug & Food InteractionsNotify your vet of any other medications, including vitamins and supplements, your pet is taking while receiving Spironolactone. Aspirin may decrease the effects of Spironolactone. Interactions are possible when Spironolactone tablets are used along with vasodilators (drugs that open blood vessels) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
The dosage of diuretic medication, such as furosemide (diuretic) may need to be altered when it is given with Spironolactone tablets. Other drug interactions may occur.
Precautions
Spironolactone will cause your pet to urinate more often. Your pet may have more accidents. Your pet needs to eat and drink well while taking this medication or the risk of side effects increases. Contact your veterinarian if your pet is not eating or drinking well, or is vomiting, has diarrhea or becomes lethargic. Do not discontinue the medication unless directed.
This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.
