What cutting is this hay?

Answer by ChewyFeb 05, 2025
It's important to note that Standlee does not guarantee a specific cutting. The variations observed in Timothy Grass results from the different cuttings. The key distinctions lie in the characteristics of the 1st and 2nd cuttings. The 1st cutting may have larger and longer stems, a coarser texture, and seed heads. In contrast, the 2nd cutting is softer, with smaller stems, minimal to no seed heads, and may include brown blades. Some animals may have preferences between the two cuttings, as some may favor the 1st cutting while others prefer the 2nd. Nutritionally, both the 1st and 2nd cuttings are identical. With the Hand Selected line of products, their team will go through their forage and select the best quality leaves, stems and seed heads that are best for the dietary needs of small animals.

Great treat that's healthy

We buy compressed bundles of this brand at our local farm store. The 9lb box is that way, too. I've tried 3 brands. This is the best for the money. We have and foster

Beautiful cuts of hay! Piggies adore

There were some layers of hay dust in the mix but the hay is premium quality and better than all the brands I've tried before

First time purchase

I was hoping to find nice soft timothy hay and this hay is as hard and somewhat green. So far I have not found timothy hay that is nice green and soft. The bags

I was hoping to find nice soft timothy hay and this hay is as hard and somewhat green. So far I have not found timothy hay that is nice green and soft. The bags of other brands are just as bad! What is going on in the timothy hay world. I did notice there was not a bunch of brown grass stuff in this Standlee, which my rabbit will not eat. At least my rabbit will eat this batch.

Clean, fresh hay

I took off one star for this hay due to its toughness. My five guinea pigs weren't crazy about it. However, I do think it's a good quality hay at a great price

I took off one star for this hay due to its toughness. My five guinea pigs weren't crazy about it. However, I do think it's a good quality hay at a great price. It wasn't dusty, and it smelled fresh. I would possibly buy this again, but would maybe mix it with a hay my guinea pigs prefer.

Too Dusty

This brand used to be fantastic, but it’s declined pretty significantly. The pieces were long & hearty before, but I got back to back “bad batches” & had to switch

This brand used to be fantastic, but it’s declined pretty significantly. The pieces were long & hearty before, but I got back to back “bad batches” & had to switch. The same thing happened on these last 2 orders. They were both full of what I can only describe as leftovers & a hefty amount of dust between each compressed layer in both boxes. Guess I’ll have to switch again. This was a second chance after discovering the order I auto shipped was sold out. I truly hope Standlee does better quality control in the future. I may try again in an emergency, but can’t trust as a regular supplier, very disappointing.

Somewhat fresh

Rabbit eats this when no other hay available. It is very coarse and she picks out the leaves. Still good

Hard to dispense

Packaged in two large flakes, hard to pull apart to dispense, also cut rather long for hay racks. Rabbits did seem to eat what I gave them

Great Value but Bunny hated it.

The price for the box is great. My bunny normally loves any Timothy Hay but this hay is hard and she did not like it ):
