About Stella and Chewy’s

In 1997, Marie Moody adopted a dog named Stella from a local animal shelter. She soon decided that Stella needed a companion and adopted a sick pup named Chewy, who joined the family and helped forge the company’s history. On the advice of a veterinarian, Marie began feeding Chewy a raw diet to help with his health issues. He quickly recovered, and both he and Stella thrived on their new food. The experience led Marie to pursue her passion for pet nutrition and start her own business—Stella & Chewy’s.

Questions & Answers

14 Customer Questions

Since freeze drying does not kill bacteria, should kitchen safety practices be used when giving the treats made with raw meats, such as immediate hand washing or sanitizer use?

Answer by ChewyMay 21, 2023
When feeding your pets their diet, we always recommend washing your hands after serving. Stella & Chewy’s has a unique food safety procedure to ensure the safety of their raw products. The most powerful step in this procedure is their high-pressure processing (HPP) step—this is a cold-water pressure process that effectively eliminates harmful bacteria from the food. They use this process on all their raw products, regardless of the protein. As food-borne bacteria can be present in any type of meat, we feel that incurring the extra cost of HPP for all our products is the responsible thing to do. This way, pet parents can rest assured that they are always bring a safe food into their home. Additionally, HPP is the only reliable method for maintaining the wonderful raw nutrition of their products while still removing harmful pathogens. We then send all batches to be tested for pathogenic bacteria – nothing leaves our facility without negative test results in hand.

are these sourced from grass-fed beef as the dinner patties are?

is the meat sourced from the USA? if not, where?

Answer by ChewySep 15, 2022
All of Stella & Chewy's ingredients come from suppliers we know, and trust and all our meats come from USDA-inspected facilities (or similar inspection agencies outside the United States) that do not allow floor waste, sick or euthanized animals. The animal proteins they use are responsibly sourced and always grass-fed, cage-free, farm-raised, or wild-caught. Stella & Chewy's pride themselves on using proteins from farms that believe in the humane treatment of their animals.

I rarely will give a five star for anything. These traits are pretty impressive as far as they’re consistency shape and size. It’s pretty obvious that you are getting freeze dried chicken hearts. The only difference between these chicken hearts and what I grew up eating as a child is that mine were deep-fried and these are freeze dried. Hopefully they never change their product because I will continue to purchase as long as the company doesn’t become cheap like so many other companies have started doing. So many products I have stopped purchasing from because they have started skipping on the quality. I highly recommend these are great for training treats as well as just crunching up and putting on top of food at dinner time to make my dogfeel like it’s a special treat.

Ted's favs have been duck in all Stella & Chewy forms until I purchased some Breakfast Sprinkles to disguise his morning Plaque Off. Noticing his delight in beef, I purchased this item to be his reward in coming home from our walkabouts. Ted is 10 and the natural enzymes in beef heart might just be supportive.

Delicious treat!

All my animals are obsessed with these. Taking 1 star away though because quite a few of the hearts were actually just chunks of fat or had fatty bits to the heart

All my animals are obsessed with these. Taking 1 star away though because quite a few of the hearts were actually just chunks of fat or had fatty bits to the heart. The fat smelled rancid, so I had to throw those pieces away. And it’s not a very big bag in the first place.

Sophie's telling me how much she liked this.

Sophie likes getting her food from her bowl normally, but these beef hearts she'll do about anything to get.
