About Stella and Chewy’s

In 1997, Marie Moody adopted a dog named Stella from a local animal shelter. She soon decided that Stella needed a companion and adopted a sick pup named Chewy, who joined the family and helped forge the company’s history. On the advice of a veterinarian, Marie began feeding Chewy a raw diet to help with his health issues. He quickly recovered, and both he and Stella thrived on their new food. The experience led Marie to pursue her passion for pet nutrition and start her own business—Stella & Chewy’s.

Questions & Answers

29 Customer Questions

Since this food is raw, does it carry the risk of contamination with E. coli, salmonella, etc.?
Answer by ChewyJun 11, 2018
All Stella & Chewy’s products are cold-pressed, using water at pressure equal to that found at the bottom of the ocean (87,000 lbs. per square inch), where harmful bacteria cannot survive. Constant monitoring also takes place to assure that the high standards established are achieved. Every batch of product is tested by an independent lab for pathogenic bacteria including salmonella and E. coli O157:H7. Only after the results are confirmed as negative is product released for shipment.

I read your "caution" that states we should not cook or heat Stella and Chewies raw, dry food. Can you tell me why and if it is harmful to pets to do so.
Answer by ChewyJun 23, 2018
This product is intended to be served raw after rehydration. Cooking this product removes the nutrients and the raw, ground bone added to this formula can become brittle and splinter.

Guaranteed Analysis doesn't add up to 100%. What's the remaining? Ash and/or Carb?
Answer by ChewyApr 25, 2018
The Ash content is 2.61%. Stella & Chewy's dinners for cats contain so few carbohydrate-laden ingredients, the as-fed carbohydrate levels in these products is less than 1% as-fed. This is for all flavors.

Does a bag of food puff up to more when feeding? I used another brand of freeze dried raw food years ago, and one bag would make many servings when water was added.
Answer by ChewyAug 17, 2020
When rehydrated per the instructions, the 3.5 ounce bag makes approximately 10.5 ounces, the 8 ounce bag makes approximately 24 ounces, and the 18 ounce bag makes approximately 54 ounces.

Newer bags cats won’t eat

This is generally one of the only foods my cat will tolerate. But 2 of the newest bags, the cats won’t touch . I wonder if there were some bad batches recently ? Or new formulation? I hope it’s just temporary bc usually it’s the best

Best food for finicky eaters

I have been feeding Stella and Chewy's food to my cats for a few years now. My older cat was a vomiter all during his first year until I found this food. No more vomiting and his coat is really healthy and shiny. Also he can be a picky eater and never turns his nose up to this. My younger cat LOVES this food. It is pricy but clearly this is healthy for my fur babies.

Was good until...

I've been feeding this food to my three cats for a while, and one of my cats won't touch this newest bag. I'm not sure if they changed the recipe or something else. My other two cats that still eat it have been having issues with vomiting and are losing their appetites. I really hope that there isn't something in the food that is making them sick, but I'm going to try not to feed it to them for a few days and see what happens.

Stella and Chewy Salmon and Chicken Dinner Morsels

My cat loves this as a morsel treat as well as reconstituted with water for a meal. High quality product and my Siamese cat's seal of approval!

Delicious say cats, but very pricey says humans

I wish these were not so expensive. I have a cat rescue, and cannot afford to give every cat even one when I buy them. Right now, I have a boy on hospice, and luckily he loves these, so he and his two friends get some every mealtime. I can count on him eating about an eighth to a quarter cup, so I know he's getting nutrition. Try them if you have a reluctant eater!

My cat can eat fish?

I have 2 cats, one of which had loose stools due to a fish sensitivity. I have avoided anything with fish for a few years, but for some reason decided to give this one a try since they loved the rabbit S&W. It's a hit, it's the favorite for both of my cats and my sensitive cat has had no issues with it. I typically feed 1/2 canned food they love, and 1/2 rehydrated S&W, and make it almost soupy. It keeps the cost down and my cats are very happy.

Not a good experience

The food was very smelly. My cat was interested but I had to chop it into smaller pieces. I gave it in small amounts (maybe 6 pieces) since it was new to her and by the second serving she had diarrhea and couldn’t make it to the litter box. It was an expensive experiment.

Quality has decreased over time

I've been ordering Stella & Chewy's salmon & chicken for 7+ years and I've noticed a difference in the nuggets. In each bag, the majority of nuggets are very pale and incredibly hard while others are darker and softer. The darker ones are similar to the ones I've gotten in the past. I'm guessing the lighter ones have more bone and the darker ones more protein. My 3 cats only eat the softer nuggets and they ignore the lighter ones. I unfortunately don't have a replacement for this food yet but will move to a new product when I do. Wasting 3/4 of each bag isn't ideal.

usually great

My cats usually can’t get enough of this but the most recent batch they’re not even touching. Bummer because this was so reliable

Disappointed

I was sure Dietrich was going to love this. We would crumble it up a bit and add warm water and let it soak a bit. He refused to eat it!!
