About Stella & Chewy's Freeze-Dried Cat Food

All the Benefits of Raw Nutrition

Give your stealthy carnivore all the meat she can dream of with Stella & Chewy's Freeze-Dried Raw Dinner Morsels. For pet parents that don't have time to prepare fresh raw foods or to wait for frozen food to thaw, freeze-dried is the best answer. These bite-size nuggets give kitties a feast of meat, organ and bones just like their wildcat ancestors. And to meet all of their nutritional needs, these recipes are formulated with added vitamins and minerals, probiotics and taurine.

The Prey Model Diet

It's only natural that your cat craves real meat—her body is designed to eat a diet that relies heavily on it. Stella & Chewy's makes it easy to feed your domesticated feline friend this prey model diet. Each recipe has 98% meat, nutrient-rich organs and bone, and there are no added hormones or antibiotics. All you have to do is rehydrate and serve. In just one minute, you'll have a wholesome, protein-rich dinner for your hungry tiger. As a bonus, she gets more water in her diet to keep her hydrated to support urinary tract health.

Raw Feeding Helps:

Minimal Processing, Maximum Flavor

Heavy processing of ingredients can diminish the nutritional value. But with freeze-dried, the end product still retains its beneficial nutrients. Frozen raw nuggets go into a freeze-dryer to remove moisture without ever applying heat or letting them thaw. So they come out with all the flavor, vitamins, minerals, omegas and amino acids they went in with. Plus, you'll never have to keep it in the freezer or defrost it.

Innovative Food Safety Technology

Food safety is always a concern, especially with raw foods. Stella & Chewy's takes every precaution with their SecureByNature food safety process that's recognized by the USDA and FDA. The ingredients undergo a special, 100% natural cold-press process that creates water pressure similar to that found near the ocean's floor. No harmful bacteria can survive, and there's no heat to damage nutrients and diminish flavor. Each batch is tested by an independent lab, and the results are even posted online for you to see.

Ethically Sourced Ingredients

Stella & Chewy's sources everything that goes into your pet's food from reputable suppliers that guarantee the integrity of the ingredients. Meat, poultry and fish are responsibly sourced from all over the world. The wholesome fruit and vegetables are certified organic.

About Stella & Chewy's

The story of Stella & Chewy's starts with two lucky rescue dogs named Stella and Chewy—and Chewy was a pretty sick pup. Their new pet parent, Marie Moody, started both of her new family members on a raw diet, and she watched them thrive. Eager to bring the same amazing prey model diet to other pets, Marie soon developed innovative food safety measures to create her own version of raw pet food—the Stella & Chewy's frozen and freeze-dried dinners and mixers that you know and love.

Questions & Answers

28 Customer Questions

Since this food is raw, does it carry the risk of contamination with E. coli, salmonella, etc.?
Answer by ChewyJun 11, 2018
All Stella & Chewy’s products are cold-pressed, using water at pressure equal to that found at the bottom of the ocean (87,000 lbs. per square inch), where harmful bacteria cannot survive. Constant monitoring also takes place to assure that the high standards established are achieved. Every batch of product is tested by an independent lab for pathogenic bacteria including salmonella and E. coli O157:H7. Only after the results are confirmed as negative is product released for shipment.

I read your "caution" that states we should not cook or heat Stella and Chewies raw, dry food. Can you tell me why and if it is harmful to pets to do so.
Answer by ChewyJun 23, 2018
This product is intended to be served raw after rehydration. Cooking this product removes the nutrients and the raw, ground bone added to this formula can become brittle and splinter.

Guaranteed Analysis doesn't add up to 100%. What's the remaining? Ash and/or Carb?
Answer by ChewyApr 25, 2018
The Ash content is 2.61%. Stella & Chewy's dinners for cats contain so few carbohydrate-laden ingredients, the as-fed carbohydrate levels in these products is less than 1% as-fed. This is for all flavors.

Does a bag of food puff up to more when feeding? I used another brand of freeze dried raw food years ago, and one bag would make many servings when water was added.
Answer by ChewyAug 17, 2020
When rehydrated per the instructions, the 3.5 ounce bag makes approximately 10.5 ounces, the 8 ounce bag makes approximately 24 ounces, and the 18 ounce bag makes approximately 54 ounces.

Cat Loves it, but Packaging is frustrating

My cat absolutely loves these, I use them as treats, he isn't very food motivated normally but loves to go after these. I've been buying regularly for a year or so, but the packaging has really frustrated me. The last 2-3 bags I've gotten as I open them they rip so that they're not able to re-seal properly. The first bag is when I pulled on the tear-away strip at the top, and figured I'd maybe done it wrong. Second bag I was much more careful and same thing happened, so figured may I should stop using the easy-open tear away. Third bag I specifically spent 2-3 minutes carefully trying to open with scissors to not ruin it, and still the re-sealable portion comes delaminated from the inside of the bag. Normally I wouldn't care too much, but this is frustrating because this is a really expensive bag of treats, now I have it spilling into my drawer, having it going stale instead of staying fresh for a month or two for my little guy, and my cat is always trying to get into the bag/drawer.

awesome cat food

I have been trying to transition my cats to this food for many years, but they never seemed to like it. I keep trying, and this time I realized they will eat it if I do not rehydrate it but use it as a topper for their kibble. In a perfect world we would get rid of all the kibble for our furry friends, cats and dogs, and replace it with something real like Stella and Chewy. No-one can survive on dried process food for very long. Our best friends deserve the best, and Stella and Chewy's is definitely one of the the best cat foods out there. I love that they use cage free chicken. Here's to a cage free world! Thank you Chewy for all you do for our best friends.

It’s a hit with BOTH cats

While my little girl eats most things I’ve offered her my male is very picky. I was surprised when I found he likes this. I typically just sprinkle one or two pieces on their wet food twice a day or soak a nugget into the juices from their wet food. They both love it. Happy cat mom here.

seem to like it

I am hoping this is the golden ticket for my furry kids. They are exceptionally picky and they "seemed" to like this food. I am not at 100% on it as yet, I'll keep you posted.

Cats Eat It!

I give my cats both this food and a royal canine kibble. I wanted to add something healthier and made from real food for my cats without the headache of fresh food. I introduced this food by mixing with Tuna for a while with juice. Now that my cats are used to it, they eat it equally as the kibble!

2 of 4 cats approve

Two of my cats like these nuggets, but the other ones will turn their nose up and walk away. They like the chicken ones much better. These are not a stinky as the salmon would suggest, and they are great for fun treat hockey where I whip a treat down the linoleum of my kitchen and the cats chase after it. I also break the treats up and leave them in with their dry food as a bonus treat, but they often get left behind.

Stick with it!

At first my cat wasn't interested... but after a slow introduction he now loves it. I'm supplementing his dry kibble with this. The morsels are rather large, so I use kitchen shears to cut them into smaller pieces. Soak 'em in a little water, and you're good to go! I like that I don't have smelly cans of food open, and I can easily control the amount I leave out in a dish. (My cat is a slow eater...)

Salmon & Chicken

My cats love this, most of the time, and it is good for them. The Chic Chic Chicken is also loved. I want them to have the best.

Young Bengal Cat Loves It

My bengal cat just turned one less than a month ago. When I picked her up last year the breeder had her on Royal Canin kitten chow, and I tried keeping her on the same food at least at first. My cat had diarrhea until she was 5 or 6 months old, maybe longer. I tried switching up her food to Weruva, and for a while she like the Paw Lickin Chicken, and I also tried Tiki Car Carnivore dry food. She was healthy otherwise but the diarrhea continued. The vet gave me a script of Royal Canin Gastrointestinal dry food and even though I was not happy about the corn and other ingredients in it, my cat seemed to like it The diarrhea stopped. I began my quest for wet food, and you hear these things how bengals should be on a raw food diet, but I was leery of doing that. Long story short, I found Stella & Chewy, and she immediately loved it. It has good ingredients especially the ground up bones and it stores really well in my fridge. She has been eating it consistently twice a day for a good 4 months. Bengals are kind of known for being long and slender, but my little cat has put on some good muscle weight. I will occasionally get her mousse treats from Tiki Cat, otherwise she won’t touch any other treats or foods. I also have a senior domestic cat that has been unwell and I have been buying all different types of foods to get her to eat, and the bengal will give it a sniff and just walk away. Stella & Chewy is her food, and ai will continue to buy it for as long as they’ll make it.
