Doesn't work like I was hoping

I am not sure what I should expect from a sponge filter but it definitely did not compare to a traditional carbon tank filter or something similar. The water remained unchanged with no improvement in clarity. All this did was agitate the water. I had it on the recommended air pump size 10 with the airline tubing.. so everything worked but as far as filtering the water goes this seems like a poor design?

SunGrow Underwater Corner Betta Fish Aquarium Filter

I was looking for a new filter for my 5-gallon beta tank. I ran across this, from the picture the name and the description, it seemed what I needed. What it did not say, is that a pump is required to use. I was disappointed this was not anywhere in the description. I did manage to get a pump from my local pet store, but that defeated the purpose of ordering online.
