do you put the cotton side in front or back (there is a plastic back).. i didn't know if it mattered? thank you

The cotton should be on the front side of the filter, that way it catches any bacteria that may be in the tank.
Is this filter slightly smaller at the bottom? 2.16 at top and 1.78 at bottom and 3.68 tall.

The overall dimensions are 3.8 inches tall x 2.1 inches across at its longest point. The images do shows that the cartridge narrows a bit towards the bottom.
Do I need to turn off my filter system to just change the filter?

We'd recommend unplugging the filter when changing the filter cartridge.
Will these filters work for 3.5 gallon tanks ?
