how are these liners different from something like newspaper?

Why does the wire grate have to be in?

Some birds like to pick and chew on the cage liners which is not healthy for then. This is why we recommend a grate be placed above the cage liners.
Do you use these instead of litter, or do you put litter on top of these?

For this product, you just place liner underneath cage grate, shiny side down. Replace liner when soiled. Not for use in cages without a wire or mesh grate over the waste area.
