Weruva Wx Phos Focused

The Weruva Wx formula has low levels of phosphorous without sacrificing protein content or quality. It offers highly bioavailable proteins for optimal digestion and good amino acid absorption to help maintain muscle mass.

Why Seek Lower Phosphorous Formulas?

As kidney health declines, the kidneys filter blood less efficiently, and phosphorous may enter the blood stream, creating new health issues. A diet with lower phosphorous, although it will not cure kidney issues, can help minimize these other ailments.

Weruva’s Lowest Phosphorous Foods

This low-phosphorous food is all natural and free of ingredients like powdered cellulose, fillers and carbohydrates that can superficially lower phosphorous percentages. Weruva Wx contains up to 50% less phosphorus than AAFCO’s minimum levels.

No Protein Sacrifice

Cats are obligate carnivores who need meat to thrive. Because maintaining muscle mass is crucial for cats with kidney issues, Weruva makes sure their Wx formula includes plenty of high-quality protein.

About Weruva

Weruva is a family company, wholly owned and operated by pet parents David and Stacie Forman since 2006. They originally developed Weruva, a luxurious natural pet food, for their three rescued cats: Webster, Rudi, and Vanessa.

Questions & Answers

Is this a nutritionally balanced cat food? Do I have to supplement?

Answer by ChewyFeb 28, 2023
This food is not complete and balanced and should not be fed as the only meal to cats on an everyday basis. Consult your veterinarian about how to fit this food into your cat's diet.

Is this produced in the USA?

Answer by ChewySep 13, 2022
Weruva wet products (pouches and cans) are manufactured in Thailand in facilities that also make food for people-much of the food for people goes to the US and countries with the strictest processing standards, such as those in the European Union, Australia and Japan. Thailand is a world leader in producing foods for people around the globe, and much of the world's tuna fish supply for people comes from Thailand (Thailand is also a top chicken producer for people). As exports are the driving force behind the Thai economy, there are strict governmental regulations in place to ensure the safe handling of food for people and pets. In addition, the processing standards from both the supply and production side must meet strict international standards. The process entails quality control standards that include keeping the factory in a condition where it can pass multiple annual inspections performed by international entities and third-party auditors, each under strict scrutiny. Such inspections ensure that we abide by Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) regulations and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) systems, meeting the demands of the global market. Perhaps the strictest human processing standard is called the British Retail Consortium (BRC). A grade of "A" on the BRC standard is regularly earned.

Phosphorus in dry matter base? And in feed matter please? Is that not too low?

Answer by ChewySep 09, 2022
This formula contains approximately 0.072% phosphorus on an as-fed basis, 0.39% phosphorus on a dry matter basis, and 78 milligrams of phosphorus per 100 kcal. Please consult with your veterinarian to ensure these values are suitable for your individual pet's dietary needs.

What is the sodium content and protein content of this food on dry matter basis?

Answer by ChewySep 01, 2022
The dry matter amounts are 0.45% sodium and 61.60% protein.

I used to love this "food", the chicken pate flavor, and have fed it to my pre-kidney-disease cat along side another (real) food for years, but lately the quality control has just gotten worse and worse. Probably 25% of cans I open are not the normal firm "food" pate (like tofu), but are a watery/goopy slop (like watery oatmeal), and only half-full cans, and I am not exaggerating. Also just an annoyance but the cans are much harder to open than any other food I've used. I put "food" in quotes because "This food is not complete and balanced and should not be fed as the only meal to cats on an everyday basis". Doesn't seem like it should be marked as "food" to me if it's a treat/supplement.

The ingredient and nutritional profile look great on this food. My cats LOVE Weruva pate food. The cat that this was intended for likes the Weruva Phos-focused treats, so I thought this would be an easy sell. No dice. I even mixed it in with her favorite Jeopurrdylicious food. Nope. Won't eat it. I would try this again on other cats that need to be on a low phosphorous diet. This cat is just too stubborn.

Fuzma has kidney disease and I've tried several prescription foods. She is about 20 years old and lost her teeth long ago so she can't eat kibble. The problem with the prescription pates is that they only come in 5.5oz sizes and she can't eat it all at one time. Once it's been refrigerated, she's not so keen on it, even if I reheat it slightly in the microwave. But she loves this Weruva Wx. The only problem is, so do my other cats. If I turn my back, the other cats are eating it and I have to shoo them away. So I never really know for sure how much Fuzma is getting. My other 2 cats are 8 and 9 years old, so I suppose it's good for them, too, even though they don't have kidney disease. It's not prescription, so much less expensive. Fuzma is only 5 lbs, but one of my boys is 25 lbs and is supposed to be on a diet. Fuzma is not going to argue with him and steps out of the way. It's complicated...

My cat enjoys this. Though any special diet food runs the risk of a cat not liking it. The combination of very low phosphorus content and being a puree was very helpful with my older cat. Her special kidney diet kibble is very hard, so she mostly ignores it. This puree isn't intended as a kidney diet food. However it is very useful to most with ground up, powdered kibble and water to make a filling meal that gets her to eat plenty of kibble without adding excess phosphorus. If someone's older cat doesn't yet have kidney issues, something like this might also be worth considering as soft food treats instead.

My senior cat was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease but wouldn’t eat the prescription food. I read that people in the same situation had good luck with the Weruva WX Phos Focused Chicken Puree food and I’m happy to say my cat likes it. My only feedback is that the cans are a bit difficult to open. Sometimes I need a little help from a butter knife to lift the lid after initially cracking it opened.
