Weruva Wx Phos Focused

The Weruva Wx formula has low levels of phosphorous without sacrificing protein content or quality. It offers highly bioavailable proteins for optimal digestion and good amino acid absorption to help maintain muscle mass.

Why Seek Lower Phosphorous Formulas?

As kidney health declines, the kidneys filter blood less efficiently, and phosphorous may enter the blood stream, creating new health issues. A diet with lower phosphorous, although it will not cure kidney issues, can help minimize these other ailments.

Weruva’s Lowest Phosphorous Foods

This low-phosphorous food is all natural and free of ingredients like powdered cellulose, fillers and carbohydrates that can superficially lower phosphorous percentages. Weruva Wx contains up to 50% less phosphorus than AAFCO’s minimum levels.

No Protein Sacrifice

Cats are obligate carnivores who need meat to thrive. Because maintaining muscle mass is crucial for cats with kidney issues, Weruva makes sure their Wx formula includes plenty of high-quality protein.

About Weruva

Weruva is a family company, wholly owned and operated by pet parents David and Stacie Forman since 2006. They originally developed Weruva, a luxurious natural pet food, for their three rescued cats: Webster, Rudi, and Vanessa.

Many cats with kidney issues also have high blood pressure- what is the sodium content of these flavors, please?

Answer by ChewyNov 24, 2022
The sodium content for the Chicken Puree recipe is 0.08% on an as-fed basis (0.45% on a dry matter basis), the Tilapia & Tuna Puree recipe is 0.12% on an as-fed basis (0.65% on a dry matter basis), the Tilapia & Chicken Puree recipe is 0.11% on an as-fed basis (0.59% on a dry matter basis), the Chicken in Gravy recipe is 0.08% on an as-fed basis (0.45% on a dry matter basis), and the Chicken & Tilapia in Gravy recipe is 0.10% on an as-fed basis (0.51% on a dry matter basis).

How much omega 3 and how much omega 6 in each flavor of pate?

Answer by ChewyAug 15, 2025
All Weruva foods are formulated to AAFCO specifications. They do not add any Omega 3 specifically to hit certain levels, and chicken breast is naturally lower than fish (especially cold-water fish). There are no AAFCO mins on the Omegas, so this is not something the manufacturer tests for regularly.

Does this require a prescription from a veterinarian?

Answer by ChewyJul 09, 2025
This recipe does not require vet authorization.

Our 13.5 year old Tigger-Tiger had to start on a kd diet. He used to get 4 different flavors of Sheba pates a day with his daily meds hidden in his breakfast (miralax and a calming supplement). We tried a few of the variety packs from various vendors hoping to find 4 different flavors of any kd wet food he would like (he prefers pates because he doesn’t have many of his teeth left). We wanted to get at least one fishy option and he seems to like the chicken and tipilia and tuna and tipilia flavors so we will alternate days of those two flavors as one of his daily meals. So far so good! The tuna and tipilia is pretty stinky as many have noted but Tigger-Tiger likes stinky food lol.

my cat is in early stages of kidney disease and she will not eat any of the prescription diets we’ve tried. we’ve been trying this for two weeks, doing a slow transition from her old food and it’s going well - she eats all of this before she even looks at her normal food. downside is that this stuff is STINKYYYYYYYY. i am not normally bothered by smell, especially not pet food smells, but this stuff is intense.

My cat did not like this, but she is also a picky eater. Chewy was kind enough to refund the money for this because Mabel didn't like it, and I donated the unopened cans to the local shelter. If you're on a budget and need kidney-friendly foods for your cat, this is a good option (as long as your cat isn't super picky).

We try to feed our cats lower phosphorous foods now that they're getting older, just to ward off any kidney issues. They aren't fans of the shreds and stews, which predominately fill that category, so it's nice to see a pate. They're not over-the-moon for these, but they'll eat them more often than not, so we will keep them in our rotation.

Tasty for an aging kitty

My cat has CKD & quit eating the vet prescription food. The vet suggested getting wet food for 7+ or 11+ aged cats, since those foods should have limited phosphorus & would be suitable for an aging cats’ needs. Sheba absolutely loves this Weruva food. This is supposed to be a supplement to get more moisture in the diet & should be used as an addition to another food. She is eating this along with a senior 11+ pate. At this time Sheba is eating more than she has in a while. I highly recommend this food for picky felines in need of added moisture in their diet.

Not for Marty

My cat did not like it at all. I know he is choosy, though. So it could just be him. But he would not eat any of them.

My kitty with kidney issues has become more finicky than ever. She would not eat her prescription kidney food a couple months ago so I bought this since its naturally low phosphorus levels, and she would eat it. She didn't love it but eventually would eat it when mixed with her regular wet pate food. But this recent purchase after a few cans she won't touch it so I figured let's try the prescription food again and see if she will now eat it. Low and behold she now likes the prescription food and won't eat the Weruva. I hope she doesn't change her mind again. Keeping my fingers crossed.

My girl is in renal failure. She used to eat the prescription food and improved all her numbers. Then one day she decided she didn't want those any longer. She went thru a spell where it was really hard to get her to eat and her numbers got a little worse. I tried this food and she has been eating again. I rotate the flavors to keep her wanting it, but right now her favorites are tilapia and tuna pate and the chicken in gravy. If she stops eating one I just take it a way for a couple weeks and reintroduce it and she will eat it again. Hopefully this helps her numbers come back from her not eating spell. She's up to 4-5 wet meals a day thanks to this food. She still eats her RC renal dry food, but much prefers her wet food.
