About Weruva Wx

Weruva Wx Phos Focused

This low-phosphorous food is all natural and free of ingredients like powdered cellulose, fillers and carbohydrates that can superficially lower phosphorous percentages. Weruva Wx contains up to 50% less phosphorus than AAFCO’s minimum levels.

Weruva’s Lowest Phosphorous Foods

The Weruva Wx formula has low levels of phosphorous without sacrificing protein content or quality. It offers highly bioavailable proteins for optimal digestion and good amino acid absorption to help maintain muscle mass.

Why Seek Lower Phosphorous Formulas?

As kidney health declines, the kidneys may no longer filter blood efficiently, and phosphorous may enter the blood stream. This can make cats feel unwell, become lethargic or experience appetite loss. The situation can become a vicious cycle as excess phosphorous in the blood further impairs the kidneys. A diet with lower phosphorous, although it will not cure kidney issues, can help minimize these other ailments.

No Protein Sacrifice

Cats are obligate carnivores who need meat to thrive. Meat is rich in high-quality protein, which helps maintain healthy muscle mass. Although cats with kidney issues may benefit from diets with lower levels of phosphorous, they still need adequate levels of protein. Because maintaining muscle mass is crucial for cats with kidney issues, Weruva makes sure their Wx formula includes plenty of protein.

About Weruva

Weruva is a family company, wholly owned and operated by pet parents David and Stacie Forman. They originally developed Weruva, a luxurious natural pet food, for their three rescued cats: Webster, Rudi and Vanessa. After searching for the best cat food under the sun to feed them, they realized the best wasn’t good enough and developed these fantastic recipes using quality sourced ingredients.

Was hoping this would be a winner, but no cigar!

Both of my babies are considered CKD kitties, sadly. I have been lucky to find some great prescription foods here at Chewy that they both love and I now alternate between Hill’s KD Chicken & Vegetable Stew (wish they made larger cans), Hill’s KD Chicken Pate (was using Tuna but they both also have hyperthyroid issues so laying off fish including Tuna), Royal Canin Renal Loaf E and 2 Royal Canin dry renals, A & S. They particularly love all of the Royal Canin’s and the Hill’s Chicken and Vegetable Stew. Sometimes in order to get them to eat a bit more I top off their remaining food with a little Royal Canin non-prescription Aging 12+ which they both go crazy over. I assume Royal Canin takes into account that many cats over 12 years of age need a phosphorous reduced diet? Their vet said it is ok to use it this way, as an enticement. Anyhoo, I saw these two chicken flavors of reduced phosphorus and moderate protein varieties which I thought would be an additional good topper or special occasional meal as well. Well, the kitties did not agree with that one bit. One is shredded chicken in a sauce. Of course they licked up the liquid and left the shavings and the other is a puree which I smeared on their remaining dinner and they ate a bit and then walked away. So I tried the already opened cans at room temperature at different mealtimes and the consensus is simply ‘not interested and don’t mess up the food we love by adding this stuff’. I will try to gift it to a cat-sitting client of mine whose kitty was just diagnosed with CKD and hope that it works for them but this is one variety that I will not be purchasing again for us. Win some, lose some. Meow!

Cats don't like it

I was also hoping my CKD cats would like this. I bought the tilapia first time and they definitely would not eat it so I thought it was the tilapia smell and flavor they didn't like. Smells delicious to me, didn't understand so I bought the chicken next time and they wouldn't eat it either. I'm sure there are cats that love this seeing the 4 star rating but unfortunately I can't give it that rating for my cats.

Safe Alternative

After my cat experienced a urinary blockage, I was told he would have to consume a low phosphorous diet for the duration of his life. After reading the ingredients in my Vet recommended product, I knew I had to find a safer but effective alternative. Weruva wx offered much cleaner ingredients while at the same time maintaining a low phosphorous level. He loves all of the flavors . I feel much better feeding him Weruva Wx.

My CKD cat wouldn’t take one bite.

I was praying that my stage 2 CKD senior cat would like this. I’ve tried everything. Nope. One sniff sent her running the other way. My healthy boy came and ate some of it. I thought yay, not a complete waste of money, but sadly he barfed up what he ate right next to the plate. Sigh. Someone please make a low phos food that finicky cats love. I’m at my wits end.

My cat loves this

I have been giving my cat prescription kidney food for about 3 years. He has tried them all & goes through phases as the rx kidney food can be bland. Currently he isn’t wanting any of them which makes meal time very long with lots of encouraging. He absolutely loves this food & I am so happy I found it. I know it’s not a prescription, but it’s pretty close to the nutritional value of the other foods he has had

No issues

My cat has taken to it with no problem. She eats it just fine and enjoys both textures. If your cat normally enjoys chicken, they’ll probably have no issues with this food.

Apparently delicious

One of our cats has kidney issues and I gave him some of this to try, since it’s a hydrating formula. He loves it!

Great brand

I think Weruva is a great brand of cat food. The ingredients are much cleaner and the price is less than some of those "prescription" brands (which my 16 year old cat does not like). He has feline kidney failure and I add this to his other Weruva canned food. He really likes all of the Weruva flavors.

Buyer Beware

I rarely do reviews but I had to make one for this product to warn people. I've been trying to find a good alternative food product for when the urinary prescription food I usually get is out of stock. Something that my picky boy would like that wouldn't agitate his bladder or form crystals in his urine. I've been trying this food and it seemed decent but overall the product is more watery and gelatinous than ideal. He usually likes shredded foods so some of the cans he liked better than the others. Overall this variety pack is not his favorite but he seemed ok eating it. The problem was today when I opened up a can that made me gag before even looking at it. When I did look at it I was horrified at the literal GRAY matter that was contained within it. One of the chicken puree cans was absolutely rancid. I believe I had previously seen a review mentioning also getting some rancid product when researching this brand, I should've listened. I felt like I had to write a review to warn people to not put it past this brand to sell rancid product. It's very sad as it has been an uphill battle trying to find the right food for my boy, and now I am potentially feeding him bad food with this brand. Horrified and grossed out is an understatement.
