This works well when compared to other natural fly sprays. Nothing gets rid of flies, but it definitely reduces them.
This product works as well as ultra shield, but you should be aware that it doesn’t kill flies it just repels them. That’s all you really want to do anyway.
I always use herbal sprays on my goats, since learning about the extreme toxicity (to cats, which are often in my barns and paddocks) of pyrethrin/permethrin. After trying two of the Ultrashield Green quart size, I bought the gallon for cost-effectiveness. PRO: The smell is not as pungent as some. It keeps mosquitoes and deerflies away for a while after applying, IF rubbed into the coat with my hand after spraying. The sprayer on the quart bottles is excellent - covers a wide band with each spray. I'll keep refilling the quart sprayers from the gallon jug. CONS: If just sprayed and not rubbed into hair, I don't think it had any effect on insects. And even when rubbed in, it seems to repel insects for only 2-4 hours. This might be enough for some people/situations but I've got biting bugs here 24/7. Still, some relief is better than none! Also, it makes the coat feel a bit gummy, and attracts and holds dust onto the coat, esp if using daily. I've got white animals that are now blotched with brown, and the dirt doesn't brush out. Maybe not an issue if you're washing horses frequently, but if I have to bathe a herd of goats in the Autumn, it will be no picnic. BOTTOM LINE: I'll continue to use this product to give the animals at least SOME safe relief from the biting insects every day, while still hoping to find something better.
I bought this because it was recommended. I find it to be expensive as most all mid range fly and other biting thing sprays offer. I think my horse had a reaction because for the first time ever in 11 years he broke out with the itchies. I'm all for the cold packed oils however. Maybe I'll dilute it a bit and see how it goes. I think this is a one and done for me. For others it might work great but for me this is a one and done buy.
My horse has different fur than most, being more sleeker and having short fur. He does get quite dusty and I didn't think about brushing him before I sprayed this. Kept the flies off very well, but gave him bad rashes all over his body that night, mainly on his back and belly, and wouldn't stop scratching himself on pretty much anything he could find. However, it does say something about this on the bottle.. If you want a natural fly spray, I've read that this stuff is great, but to save you from some pretty bad rashes, I would not recommend.
So nice not to have to worry about you or your horse inhaling this spray. It smells great, makes his coat shiney and is not harmful. You do need to apply daily.
I have been using this product for several years. It is much less toxic than many of the cheaper products out there.
This product works great to keep flying pests off my horses. I was skeptical since it's natural - but it works better than the other UltraShield product. Just got my 2nd gallon!
It got here in a timely manner and I love the buy 2, get 1 free deal! that's the best way to save money, and its one of those products that you can never have enough of when it comes to horses.
I would love to find a truly natural fly and pest repellent for my horses.
