Keeping your guinea pig looking and feeling good means having all the right guinea pig grooming supplies on hand. Chewy carries a variety of grooming supplies for guinea pigs including guinea pig shampoo, grooming gloves and brushes, nail trimmers and more. Read on to learn about some of the things you may need to regularly groom your guinea pig.
Guinea pigs need regular grooming, so having a few essential guinea pig grooming tools will make your job easier. While shorthaired guinea pigs can be brushed with a hand or mitt, you may want to use a soft bristle brush on them to make things easier. Longer-haired guinea pigs will require more grooming tools and will need to be brushed more frequently. Invest in supplies like a wide-tooth metal comb, a slicker brush and a flea comb in addition to a soft-bristle brush to keep them tangle-free and silky. You may also want to get some guinea pig grooming clippers if you're doing all your grooming yourself. Trimming the nails is also essential, and a good pair of small animal nail clippers will make the job easier. Having a guinea pig first aid kit and some guinea pig bandages on hand for emergencies is a good idea, too.
Guinea pigs usually do a pretty good job of keeping themselves clean, but they may need baths if they get especially dirty, have parasites, or are being shown in competition. Be sure to use only a shampoo made for guinea pigs or small animals and take care not to stress your pet or let him get chilled.
You can find all the guinea pig supplies you need for good grooming and health at Chewy.com. You should bathe a guinea pig no more than once a month, unless your pet needs an anti-parasite bath or your vet recommends it for other reasons. You can probably bathe your cavy even less than that; especially if he's a shorthaired guinea pig; as guinea pigs do a good job of keeping themselves clean. Bathing guinea pigs too frequently can dry their skin and put them at risk for skin infections and respiratory infections like pneumonia. Be careful not to let your guinea pig get too chilled, avoiding drafts and towel drying gently immediately after bathing.
You can use a shampoo made specifically for guinea pigs or small animals to wash your guinea pig. You can also clean lightly soiled guinea pigs with a warm, wet washcloth or a dry shampoo made for guinea pigs. Small animal powder shampoos that you rub in and brush out work well for guinea pigs and can save you both the stress of a bath.
You shouldn't use baby shampoo or any other human shampoo to wash guinea pigs, as it will be too harsh on their skin and might cause dryness and irritation. Choose a pH-balanced shampoo that's made specifically for small animals, and try to avoid brands with strong fragrances since guinea pigs have sensitive noses. Fragrance-free shampoos are best, but some guinea pigs won't mind a lightly scented shampoo, either.
