Is this toy edible? My dogs chews them down to smaller and smaller sizes.

Answer by ChewyJan 09, 2018
Benebones are not edible.

Hi, I just bought Benebone dog chew for my pomeranian last week, she is a “super power chewer”, and I saw that she chewed some small pieces out of it, will it be harmful for dogs if they eaten some pieces of it? Thanks.

Answer by ChewyJun 28, 2020
If pieces the size of rice or smaller fall off the Benebone, these generally do not cause a problem. If the product has lost more than a sugar cube’s worth of volume, it’s time to replace.

how big is regular

Answer by ChewyMay 27, 2020
The Small size is 5.3 by 3.8 inches. The Medium size is 7 by 4.8 inches. The Large size is 8.3 by 5.5 inches.

Is this suitable for “power chewers”?

Answer by ChewyMay 27, 2020
The time it takes to wear down a Benebone varies depending on a dog’s chewing habits as well as jaw size and strength. It is recommended that power chewers be given the largest size they can handle.

Destroyed my dogs teeth!

My dog seemed to be having pain in his mouth (lip smacking and lethargic) so I scheduled to have his teeth cleaned! I have been giving him these bones for years based on the claim that they help keep the dogs teeth clean. After the exam and cleaning, the vet told me that his teeth were worn down to the pulp and that he should never be given these bones/chews again. I have to wonder WHY these are still on the market. My dog is in pain and his teeth are ruined! Doing a search online is all it takes to verify this and save you and your dog some grief.

I have a large breed dog and he loves these. When his dog friend comes over she will "borrow" his and chew on it as well. I highly suggest monitoring your dog while chewing these. Pieces can come off and you don't want them swallowing them and as the toy gets smaller you will need to eventually replace it. It will get a rough texture as they chew it so we will every so often sand it down and rinse it off so it doesn't harm our dog's mouth. I am happy with the Benebone chews and would rather this than rawhide or bully sticks.

Not for strong chewers

This plastic "bone" isn't great for tough chewers, in spite of what it says. It became sharp, and sharp pieces also break off and get ingested, which didn't go well

This plastic "bone" isn't great for tough chewers, in spite of what it says. It became sharp, and sharp pieces also break off and get ingested, which didn't go well for my dog as they passed through (and out of) her body. Caused several days of bleeding, and I threw all her Benebones away.

My little girl loves these but I didn't expect the medium to be so large. I should have read the description more carefully. She can hardly carry it. She'll enjoy

To be honest I normally would never give this toy to my dogs due to the plastic but my daughter has some for her dogs & my dog would steal it when she was visiting so I broke down and got her one , this bone has entertained her for quite some time , and she still has it , she chews on it every once in awhile , does keep her busy .

We have a Daniff (Mastiff/Dane) and she has chewed up ALL of her toys within minutes to hours. But not this bone! She has knawed on this thing for hours, we've had the same one now for 4 months. She takes her puppy energy out on it and it hasn't even cracked. Absolutely feel every giant breed dog owner needs this for their puppies! She's actually 16 months now and still loves it! We have the giant one but I'm sure it's great for all puppies since it comes in all sizes. I'm also not worried about her chewing off some of it and swallowing it because it literally has nothing wrong with it!

Our 7mo Bernese Mountain Dog devours toys -- anything with a squeaker or stuffing is destoyed in a day. Firehose toys? Naaah... kidstuff! She met her match with the Benebone -- we'll need to replace it in a month (added to autoship!) but it's tough and she loves it. No pieces of any size come off but it does get roughed up. I tried using a Dremel tool with a small sanding drum to take down some of the burrs from her chewing -- it worked but she re-doubled her efforts and we'll be replacing it. Better to replace a toy than a chair leg, furniture or couch cushion. Highly recommended for aggressive chewers and less expensive than elk antlers (which are also great).
