We selected this product because our dog has advanced kidney disease. We tried a product from our vet, which our dog did not like. Our dog doesn't love this product, but she will eat it. The problem with this product is there are little vitamin pellets, which sink to the bottom of the bag. So our dog doesn't get the vitamins most of the way through the bag, even though we shake the bag. But, her kidney numbers have improved since starting with this food, so we will stick with it. Not perfect, but does the job.
We have been using this food since the end of 2020 when we were told our then 9 yr old Shepherd was in kidney failure. I told the vet I didn't want to feed her chemicals & he said some are more natural than others & to pick one we felt we could live with. BB KS was an easy choice. 2 1/2 yrs later she's very stable & her kidney values declined considerably. Last fall the food was hard to find because BB was reformulating it from grain free to grain inclusive, We tried her on another kibble and after a few weeks of trying she literally stopped eating & drinking her "soup" which is vital because she drinks very little on her own. We were so happy to see it again & she's back to eating her food & drinking her soup with her BB KS kibble as "croutons". This is a great product & I highly recommend it. This all started when she was 9.5 yrs old & she will be 12 yrs old in 3 months, doing great. Thank you, Chewy for getting our girl's food to us so quickly!
I purposely ordered this dog food for my 12+ yr old Yorkshire Terrier who has been diagnosed with kidney failure. The product had received good reviews in the social media and I felt the ingredients were in keeping with Blue Buffalo's reputation. I also trusted that the kibble size would be appropriate for a Toy Dog since a Yorkshire Terrier is prominently displayed on the bag. BOY, WAS I WRONG!!!!! The kibble pieces are the size of a nickel coin much too big for an older Yorkie to be able to eat. So I tried soaking, but this kibble does not soak into soft pieces - I still had to cut up the individual pieces with a knife! So I had to throw out the food as an expensive lesson in not being fooled by packaging. Blue Buffalo, you got an "F" on this product from this teacher!
As a retired vet tech, I research all food I give my pets so when I needed a prescription kidney diet for my two boys, I was surprised how many bad ingredients the so called high end, big brands contained. If I wouldn't feed those ingredients in a regular diet, I'm surely not going to pay top dollar for a prescription diet with them in it. Blue Buffalo is the Only brand that has deboned chicken as the first ingredient, no wheat, soy or corn as a cheap filler and no meal by-products or cancer causing dye. News flash, dogs don't care what color their food is, coloring is for humans to think it looks good. My dogs love the taste of Blue Buffalo and of course, when switching to a new food, follow the directions for mixing new food with the old, to avoid stomach and gastrointestinal upset. Dogs really do have a sensitive digestive system and switching foods all at once can cause stomach upset and even diarrhea. So follow the directions, it's not the foods fault if you don't. I recommend Blue Buffalo to all my friends and clients. My boys are 8 and 14 years old and after switching to Blue Buffalo KS, their kidney values are back to normal.
My dog has elevated kidney labs so i put him on this till bag is gone. Then I am going to give him senior and healthy weight soft. Then I will have labs repeated. someone else said they did this and there was improvement
My dog who is on renal diets loves this dry food and canned wet Blue Buffalo is not available and to my surprise she loves it. I also sprinkle it on her other canned renal diet foods as well. Try it.
I tried everything: cheese grated into it, canned tripe added to it, coconut oil or butter drizzled onto it. I wish I had ordered the small bag first.
Sorry, my aged dog doesn't like; going to donate rest of bag. Expensive experiment.
My dog loves this food. We make it moist with hot water and the dog devours it.
My dog won't eat this version of renal food. She likes Royal Canaan
