The Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Chicken & Vegetable Stew Canned Dog Food is clinically proven nutrition that can help transform your pet’s life. As pets age, damage to the kidney tissues may occur, which affects the kidney’s role to function properly and filter toxins and waste from the blood. It is irreversible, and will lead to further loss of kidney function. This may also decrease their appetite, which could eventually result in the loss of muscle mass. And so the Hill’s nutritionists and veterinarians created this special diet, which supports your dog’s kidney function and helps to sustain muscle mass—in fact, the nutrition of k/d is clinically tested to improve and lengthen the quality of life.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state?
Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.
Do authorizations expire?
Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

This food can be mixed with dry food.
I see the feeding for my 10lb dog is 1 can a day but the Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Beef & Vegetable Stew Canned Dog Food for 10lb is 2 1/3 per day. Is that correct?
Answer by • Mar 21, 2018
The size of the can will determine how many cans you'll feed per day. A 10 pound dog will have one 12 ounce can. If feeding a 5.5 ounce can, a 10 pound dog will have 2 1/3 cans.
My chihuahua with early stage kidney disease wont eat the Hills KD dry but will gobble this stew up. Is it ok to feed her exclusively wet?
Answer by • Oct 19, 2017
While the wet formulas are a complete and balanced diet we recommend that you consult with a veterinarian to make to make sure this is the best fit for your pet and their current treatment plan.
After JJ’s blood work returned with early detection of kidney disease, his doctor recommended he start by changing his diet and prescribed him with Hill K/D. She warned me that most dogs find this food unpleasant because of the low protein and to start off with a small bag due to how expensive the brand is. Even my sister in law who was a vet tech says it’s basically “cardboard” to dogs. I went ahead and purchased both wet and dry in hopes he would eat it. And to my surprise? He inhaled it! He’s scheduled for a follow up visit in a couple weeks to see how things are going with his kidneys, but I’m feeling confident the food is helping! I’ve noticed his water intake is looking more normal and he’s needing to go outside less! Looking forward to see his blood work! OH! Also LOVED that chewy reached out to his doc for a doc note!

K/D dog food
My Chihuahua recently diagnosed with high kidney values. Started her on KD kidney care or dry kibble combined with KD kidney care chicken and vegetable stew. She loves the food, she has no more vomiting no more soft stools and is putting all the weight back on that she lost from not eating. I would recommend this food highly for any dogs with kidney disease it has been a lifesaver.

Lucy loves it!
Lucy had stopped eating completely. I thought she was going to die. The vet gave her a sample of this stuff, and she at it right up, so I bought a case of it. She LOVES it, and eats all I give her, every day. She has her energy back, and is now a happy dog! Also, this stuff looks and smells good enough for a human to eat! No kidding!

He's Eating!
Simon loves it!! At last, he's eating! We've been trying so many different things for so long (including baked chicken breast and shredded pork), to no avail. He'd rather eat the cat food! Until now! I wish this wasn't so expensive, but Simon's 15 years old, and to me, is worth every cent!

Chewy is a lifesaver
Our Mini Schnauzer Jake has kidney disease and must eat special KD Diet food. We were getting our food and our LRS from our vet but due to shipping challenges, they sometimes didn't have the flavor of food he eats. So we began auto shipping his food through Chewy and now we NEVER worry whether he will have his food. This is so worry-free. Chewy even takes care of getting the vet authorization for his prescriptions.

Snowball loves chicken stew
We rescued Snowball 6 years ago; she is about 17 years old, mostly blind and deaf, and is experiencing renal failure. Our Vet prescribed Hill's and she loves it. The stew is easy for her to eat; she doesn't have many teeth left! She enjoys her meals very much. Plus, Chewy provides excellent service, good prices and fast delivery.

kidney care dog food
looks good, smells good but have difficulty getting him to eat it. Vet suggested and I am going to comply. He probably just needs to get used to it. Vet stated all these "kidney healthy" foods are not the dogs favorite. He is older and needs to do what he needs to do to prolong his life just like me !

Good taste
Used along with the solid chicken variety for kidney care of my dog who had had significant kidney failure. When she stopped eating dry food, she enjoyed eating this food until she stopped eating altogether due to the worsing of the kidney failure.

Unfortunately my dog would not eat it
My dog is 14 and his kidney levels were slightly elevated so we made the switch. I cant say I would not recommend because I think it depends on the dog, but my dog did not like it. I even tried the beef flavor and the dry food, but no luck. We are going to try Purina and hopefully he will like that but until then he is back on the Hills T/D bites.
