The Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care with Chicken Dry Dog Food is clinically proven nutrition that can help transform your pet’s life. As pets age, damage to the kidney tissues may occur, which affects the kidney’s role to function properly and filter toxins and waste from the blood. It is irreversible, and will lead to further loss of kidney function. This may also decrease their appetite, which could eventually result in the loss of muscle mass. And so the Hill’s nutritionists and veterinarians created this special diet, which supports your dog’s kidney function and helps to sustain muscle mass—in fact, the nutrition of k/d is clinically tested to improve and lengthen the quality of life.

I chose Hills Science Diet because the company name has been around for a very long time. I needed to get my dog onto kidney care of food because he is going into kidney failure. When I open the bag, I noticed that there is this greasy look and feel to the food. Since we started this food, a few weeks ago, my dog has: had diarrhea multiple times, thrown up, I had constipation for more than 48 hours, and is generally looking sick and sad. Today, he’s refused to eat his breakfast and has been moping around the house. I can’t watch him suffer just to keep him around a little longer.
Cooper, my 6lb Yorkie, was recently diagnosed with kidney failure. We tried Purina Pro Plan first because her vet suggested it. Cooper could not manage the kibble because it doesn’t come in a small size for tiny mouths. So we switched to Hills. The kibble is much smaller and she finishes each meal happily. What a relief for me. I love this little girl and want to keep her healthy!!!! Thank you, Hills.
Based on some worrying kidney and liver values on our dog’s blood and urine tests, our vet recommended we switch to a kidney diet. Not only did this food get his levels back to a healthy place, but in less than two months, he started growing all his hair back!! Our dog has never been able to regrow hair in the five years we’ve had him, and was losing quite a bit of hair over the last year. He grew his fur back so quickly and his coat was noticeably way softer and looked healthier. Our dog had no problem switching to this food, he seems to like it just fine and we couldn’t be happier with the results it has given him.
They just diagnosed my yorkie with kidney issues. I first bought an 8.8 lb bag at the vet, and then this larger bag. The kibble is small enough for littler dogs, maybe half dime size or a little smaller, see picture. Be sure to get the bag with the terrier on the front. My dog is 12 pounds. This food has some ingredients I don't care for, but there are few options. The good news is this is the first dry food since I have had her for 6 years, that she has ever eaten straight from the dish. So whatever they add they call the enhanced appetite trigger, I would say it works. I do still give her the Hills wet K/D with it, which is a paste type wet food. She likes that too. Yes, this is pricey food. There are cheaper options for bigger dogs here and the regular outlets. For small dogs with kidney issues, this is your best option. I will continue to buy.
Our Aussie, Bear, age 16, was recently diagnosed with the beginnings of kidney failure. Our vet recommended Hill’s prescription diet. I was very concerned that Bear would not eat this food. In fact, he loves it and whether he will eat is no longer a concern! It will be a while before we know if it has slowed the decline in his kidney function.
This was our first shipment as our little guy developed a kidney ailment in his senior years. Communication from Chewy was excellent, and the shipment arrived timely. He seems to be liking the food, which is very important. Pricey for us but necessary under the circumstances. He's our best friend. We can't let him down.
My dog was just diagnosed with kidney disease and we were told to feed her K/D. She is a VERY picky eater but she eats this food! We were told it is formulated perfectly for kidney disease. I've been doing lots of research on my own and unless I want to cook my own meals for my dog, this formula truly has everything she needs to be kidney friendly
Omg, my poor rescue has had health problems since before we found him emaciated 4 years ago! Getting his healthcare to match his needs has been a struggle but! Once we got this prescribed, He's now finally getting better muscle definition, he's looking and feeling better every day and putting on healthy muscle! I'm thrilled with the quality of life change.
My dog has early stages of kidney disease so doctor prescribed this. I put the canned chicken stew, with it just a couple of tiny spoons and he just licks the bowl clean. It is expensive but can't put a price on our fur babies. I can eat beans LOL
The one star is based on the taste of a 15 yr old small rescue mixed terrier with chronic kidney disease and stage 1 periodontal disease. The marketing photo on the package does not necessarily imply that the kibble is small bite size for my type of dog. I have to cut the pieces in half to make it easier for him to chew along with some prescription canned kibble.
