The easiest way to feed fresh is to get into a cycle of freezer to refrigerator to bowl. Remove the package from the freezer and defrost in the refrigerator (preferred), or immerse in cold water. Store in the refrigerator in a glass or plastic container and then serve the recommended amount. JustFoodForDogs lasts for a year when frozen.
You want to think about your dog’s fresh food the same way you do your own. An hour, or even two is not going to be a problem, but if you accidentally leave it out overnight, it should be thrown away.
Does JustFoodForDogs use any preservatives? Our only preservative is the freezer. We do not add any preservatives at all.
Yes. Each of our canine daily diets have gone through Evidence-Based Research at a major university. Since day one, we have balanced our food to National Research Council (NRC) standards. The NRC reports directly to the FDA and is the most up-to-date authority on nutritional guidelines. Our feline recipe is formulated to meet the 2016 AAFCO nutritional profiles for feline maintenance.
Frozen dog food will be shipped on dry ice and in an insulated box or a box with a Styrofoam insert. This ensures the food remains frozen all the way to your door.

I love this food and more importantly my dog LOVES this food! Our Jack is going on 16 and his kidneys are starting to go. After being on this food for a couple of weeks, Jack is more alert, and no more vomiting. Getting his blood work done next week to check his kidneys.
My small senior dog (13 yrs) was diagnosed with beginning kidney disease and recommended to put on a renal support diet. I found Just Food for Dogs and immediately ordered it for my dog. It has been great for him: he loves it. I notice that his energy has increased, sleeping less and being more active and alert. However, it seems the food is high in fat. He has gained some weight and it has been hard to lose the weight. This food would be so much healthier if the fat content would be lower. That is the reason for the 4 stars, otherwise, it would be 5.
My little malti-poo absolutely loves this food. She can hardly wait for me to put the bowl down for her to eat. Easy to order on auto ship.
I’m really surprised but my dog won’t touch this stuff. I have most of the order left and no clue what I’m going to try next. I don’t know what to feed her now with this kidney diet.
Our older dog was diagnosed with renal issues and placed on a prescription dog food. Our vet warned us that some dogs have a difficult time adjusting to renal prescription diet, because it's bland and flavorless. After 3 months of trying other brands, only to be rejected by our dog, we discovered JustFoodForDogs Renal support low protein dog food. Our dog doesn't LOVE this food, but he will eat it, unlike other prescription brands we have tried. He is back to eating the amounts he should, he looks great, his activity levels are back up to normal, and his attitude is back to normal too. Be aware, this is delivered frozen, so it is only shipped on specific days of the week, to make sure it is delivered in a timely manner. The downsides to this dog food are the packaging and the price. It stores in your freezer just great, but once thawed, you have to put it into a sealable container. And, frankly, it's very expensive. All prescription dog foods are expensive, but this is really expensive. Will I get more? Absolutely, because my dog will eat it. But the price hurts, every time.
My golden doodle has stage 2 kidney disease and stopped eating well when we started the kidney recipe kibble. Vet mentioned just food for dogs and she is back to eating very well again and her kidney labs are reversing! All due to this food!
I'm sure this is quality food that other dogs like, but my picky dog no like at all! He hates rice and any meat other than chicken. This food did not have a noticeable odor to me so I would think that might have to do with him not liking it. The 3 star rating is his only not mine.
My dog had to go on a renal diet 6 months ago, and finding food that she is willing to eat has been a big challenge. When I got the email about this new food and a 40% offer, I had to try it. Unfortunately my dog would not touch it. I even tried mixing in some turkey which is her favorite meat (defeats the purpose of a renal diet) and she still would not even try it. Now I'm stuck with these frozen packs of expensive dog food. I will try to give it to the local shelter, but with this being frozen food and a special diet, I'm not sure they will be able to take it. I really wish Chewy and its merchants would sell individual samples, even at a higher per unit cost, so customers don't have to waste so much uneaten food.
My dog has eaten the same dog food for about 15 years due to not being able to eat most proteins. I was worried when she needed to switch to a special kidney diet, but she loves it and has continued to eat it for close to 2 weeks. After a couple days she had a little more “pep in her step”. I thought we were losing her, but know I have hope she’ll be with us at least a little longer (she’s a 15 1/2 year old Shiba Inu with medical issues)
This food is helping me hand feed my dog who is not eating on her own. I can make small balls when mixing with a high quality paté canned food and pop them in her mouth. I like that this is a veterinary formula and I don't have to worry about balancing her nutrition. My criticism is that the rice is not cooked thoroughly and the carrots are like small rubbery things that come out whole and bright orange just as they looked before "digestion". That makes the carrots a wasted ingredient. I appreciate that this company is offering an alternative to kibble with good quality ingredients. The food, at the regular price, is prohibitively expensive for a large dog unless you have a medical need, as I do. I certainly recommend this food for a dog with in appetence who must be hand fed.
