I have been trying every renal food available. She wouldn’t eat anything. She’d rather starve. Then I tried Dr Harvey’s and she eats it but I have to bury ground Turkey in it. A friend told me about this food. She loved it immediately. I have a sample which I’m using. As soon as my Dr Harvey’s is gone I’ll switch fully to this. People said it smells bad. It smells like cooked cauliflower to me. All of those Hills renal choices she hated and was losing muscle. She did good on Dr Harvey’s gaining back muscle and weight. Seeing her love this one is wonderful. She has her energy back.
Honestly, I almost didn’t offer this to my dog because it smelled like rotten cabbage in a sweat sock, and it had what looked like some kind of fungus growing on it. Very gross. The dog doesn’t seem to mind it though, but she also likes to eat dead things and turds, so I don’t really credit her with a distinguishing palate. I only got this because they were out of the frozen kind (which is much better smelling), and I was very concerned because all I could think about were all the possible pathogens and toxins that might be in it. I had to try it though because I was out of food and the other reviews here also say it stinks, so I’m taking the chance. So far she seems okay after two days.
Our vet told us to switch to a low protein renal support diet for our aging dog and although he likes the taste of this food its really not worth the brown waterworks all over the place. The only reason we bought the shelf stable was due to the frozen version of this same food being out of stock. Not sure if its due to supply chain issues or what but if you are dealing with the same issue and the frozen version is out of stock do not buy this shelf stable version as a replacement unless you really love struggling to pick up puddles of diarrhea.
I just recently found out that my 15 year old dog (aka) my baby has kidney disease and so I started her on a renal diet and she loves it
My dog has grown to be a picky eater in his old age, so when his bloodwork showed possible early kidney disease and the vet said to put him on a renal support diet, I was like... oh geez. He's a fan of JustFoodForDogs, so I tried this out and... he loves it. He loves it more than the regular flavors. He will refuse the other flavors until I give him this. If you're in the same boat, definitely give this a shot.
My dog requires a kidney diet and so far he just will not stick with anything. I had high hopes that this would do the trick since it's more like "people" food and might be more interesting to him, but after a few weeks he refuses to eat it. He also had very soft stools with a lot of undigested rice and carrots which was unfortunate but I was putting up with since it was the only thing he would eat for a little while. Now that he's refusing I've got at least 15 cartons left of this extremely expensive food sitting around and I've got to find a different food again. Hopefully his poops at least go back to normal!
My dog is a really picky eater, she loves it even though it smells so bad. Her poop is also really soft with a lot of what looks like the rice left undigested, which concerns me
Pete doesn't reallyike it. If I feed it to him with my finger he will eat a small portion of it but he isn't at all excited about it so for the price $$$$ alot I probably won't buy again but research for another food for renal failure and there aren't very many...
The first box I opened had a dark brown scum on the surface and a very strong mineral odor; my dog would not touch it. The second box I opened still had the odor but it did not have the scum on the surface; after mixing it with other food my dog ate some of it. I am hoping my dog will learn to accept this product as she needs the kidney support. It would be nice to have the option to purchase 2 or 3 boxes as a sample to find out if your dog will eat this food before ordering the full 12 box quantity.
My dog has been somewhat of a picky eater ever since being diagnosed with kidney disease in July 2021. I was constantly having to change her food to get her to eat. She didn’t like any frozen Just Food for Dogs but she has always liked these shelf stable packs but would never like to eat more than 2 packs (last 6 days) at a time. I mix this with the blue Buffalo kidney kibble and she loves it. Has been in stage 4 since Feb 2022 and after 3 months of this food combo and fluids every other day, she is back to stage 3 and going strong.
