What is compounding?
Compounding is a way for licensed pharmacists to create a customized medication that meets your pets specific needs. Compounding pharmacists mix or change one or more FDA-approved medications to prepare a special medication for your pet. For example, if a medication is only available in pill form, the pharmacist might create it in liquid, gel, or capsule form.
Why do some pets need compounded drugs?
Your pet may have a specific health need that cannot be addressed by an FDA-approved drug. For example:
- Your pet has trouble taking pills but will take medication in a flavored liquid or other form.
- Your pet needs medication in a strength that is not commercially available.
- Your pet is allergic to a specific ingredient in a medication.
Always talk with your veterinarian about any concerns you have about your pets health so they can prescribe a treatment for your pets unique needs.

Has tremendously helped my Zozo with IBD
My 5yo poodle has been on maintenance dose for the last 3 years and this medication has really worked for her. I wish Chewy would have a flavor free option. The problem with adding flavor (at least for my fur baby) is that she loves it so much, that every time I open the fridge, she thinks she is getting more budesonide, so she comes running. I have had to order this from a different source at a more expensive price, since the whining was getting too much.
Taste needs work
Feline Raya has been on Budesonide since she was a kitten to help her tummy. Chewy recently started offering this and we were super excited. We love Chewy's user friendly online ordering and excellent customer service. Extra bonus: the price was significantly cheaper than other vendors. However, Raya HATES the taste of this. HAHAHA - poor thing. We have gone from her willingly coming to take her meds or lazily laying down for the neighbor to give them to having to sneak up behind her and catch her off guard. She does a cat yuck hack and acts like a little kid. If she sees you coming, she runs off with tail low. So... Chewy - you've got some work to do. The taste of this med needs work... xoxo
Prx is Great!
Prx is great. MUST order the chicken flavor. Fish flavor is just awful. Overpowering smell of rancid fish. Can’t imagine what it tastes like.
Great product at a great price
I am so happy Chewy is compounding medication now. My cat loves the chicken flavor. Chewy is much more reasonably priced than other vet compounding pharmacies.
Great people assisting with the orders.
The med came quickly and with the cat needing it, I'm grateful. The second cat's not a good patient but I'll keep trying.
Alternative to prednisolone and working well.
We switched to budesonide to treat my senior kitty's IBD (from prednisolone) and have noticed a lot of improvement! She loves the chicken flavor. I am so glad Chewy carries this now because it saves us a long trip to the vet to get it - and if you have a fur baby with IBD and prednisolone is too harsh for them, talk to your vet about budesonide. The dropper numbers rub off after a short time, but we dealt with it by using a permanent marker to mark the amount we need to give our pet, and taping over it. Works fine!
Budesonide seems fine, but the syringes DON'T work
The medicine itself was fine, but I was grateful I had a syringe from another pharmacy. BOTH syringes were totally defective. I feel bad for someone without a back up.
Great save
This was much cheaper then what the Vet was going to provide. Also very quick shipping.
