Do we need to clean the carbon filter before using? How to clean the filter??

The carbon filter does not need to be cleaned before use. The Cat Mate or Dog Mate Fountain needs to be cleaned periodically. When you clean the fountain discard the old filter and add a new one to the fountain. I have attached a video below showing how to clean your fountain from start to finish.
what is the difference between these and the other cat mate filters that are listed?

The "Cat Mate Replacement Filter Cartridges for Cat Mate and Dog Mate Fountains" features 2 polymer-carbon filters, whereas the "Cat Mate 3-Stage Filter Cartridges" features 4 filters with activated carbon to remove chlorine and unpleasant odors. Both filters are compatible with all Cat Mate and Dog Mate fountains.
Is there any way to recycle the plastic case for these filters after they’re used?

The plastic that houses the filters may be recycled via your local recycling facility. They must be broken apart and the filter media removed before recycling.

Doesn’t fit

The filter doesn’t fit my cat Mate fountain allowing hair and dirt to go around the sides of the filter. I have to clean the fountain more often than recommended. Generic ones are worse so I’ll keep buying these.

Great filters

These are very efficient filters that keep the water clean and free of hair and debris. I have 3 cats, 2 of whom like to stick their paws in the water to drink, and these filters do a great job of trapping the dirt from their paws and keeping it from circulating. I clean the fountain and replace the filter every 5-7 days. Chewy definitely has the best prices and I always have these on my autoship.

Ordered wrong filters

Never used these - I ordered these mistakenly. They were the wrong filters for my Pet Mate Shell Fountain. Will be return I ng these as soon as I get the return shipping label in my physical mailbox at my residence.

Only ones I will buy

I only buy the petmate replacement filters. I had tried some by a different company, but they ended up turning the water yellow. The price was reasonable and they are tried and true.

After 8 years of daily use with four cats this fountain is still going strong

I love the Cat Mate fountain. I bought one eight years ago for my 4 cats and am still using it. They love drinking water from it as long as I change the filter every every 6-8 weeks. That may seem frequent, but all my cats are long-haired. They shed fur into the fountain often. The filter does a good job of trapping that fur as long as I change the filters on time. I am quite happy with this fountain water system because it is durable, the filters are reasonably priced through Chewy, and the tiny pump sufficiently circulates the water through the filter, up to the upper level, and back down to the bottom basin. Cats (or small dogs) can drink from either level. My cats prefer drinking from the running stream of water that is pumped down to the basin. I did have to replace the pump several years ago. One pump replacement in 8 years is not bad. I take care of the fountain and it looks and operates like new. It was a great purchase.
