Questions & Answers

I was wondering which color bowl you would recommend as a water bowl? I just adopted/rescued a 2 year old beagle and my vet recommended that I buy her a puzzle bowl to slow down her eating time. I've decided on the mini teal bowl for food but am not sure which would be best for water. Help!

Answer by ChewyJan 17, 2018
With hydration being very important, I would recommend the bigger Regular size Bowl to make sure that there is plenty of water available to your pet.

Do these work for cats?

Answer by ChewyMay 10, 2018
This bowl can also be used by cats.

I feed my dog Royal Canin German Shepherd Adult dry dog food which has pretty large kibble pieces. Will they fit between the crevices of this slow feeder or will they sit on top or get stuck? How much room is there between each crevice?

Answer by ChewySep 17, 2020
The kibble of the Royal Canin German Shepherd Adult Dry Dog Food will fit in this interactive feeder. Check out the photo below to get an idea of how large the grooves of this bowl are.

What is the diameters of this bowl?

Answer by ChewyApr 24, 2018
The Regular size measures 12.75 inches long x 11 inches wide x 2.88 inches high and has a 4 cup capacity. The Mini size measures 9.5 inches long x 8 inches wide x 2.65 inches high and has a 2 cup capacity.

In the 30 years with dogs, we have never had concern about fast eaters. Enter 2 7 month olds and talk about inhaling their food! I was shovkrd. We tried various things and got nowhere so I turned to Chewy. Matched to this product and others like it. Fast eating problem gone with the very 1st use. For both dogs! Amazing product. Cleans up easily and delivers advertised results!

My pup used to eat his whole bowl of food in less than a minute and then throw it up soon after. Once we switched to this bowl, he takes more time to lead the food to the center so he can reach it. And his poor sister gets to eat her food in peace now as well instead of him finishing his and then going over to steal hers when he is done since they both finish at the same time now! It's also easy to wash and dishwasher friendly.

I took a picture next to her other bowels to show you how large it is. The next size down from Outward Hound is the small mint colored bowl, but they only have it in that shape. My dog only gets 1/3 or 1/2 scoop each time she eats. The smaller slow feeder only gave her an extra minute or two of eating. This teal, large bowl actually makes her take about 10-15 minutes to eat her food. The ridges are very deep in this bowl. She has to lick it because she's only 15 lbs. She ends up licking it in a circle sometimes. It says you can fit 2 cups, but if you need to feed your dog 2 cups, this won't slow them down as well. The smaller OH bowl was up to 3/4 cup, but the issue is then all the food is already at the top. I do wonder if they made a smaller size if it could still work. For now, I'm very happy with this bowl other than the space it takes up.

In use for about a month for two big dogs. The dogs are calmer and slower with these bowls, which means meals last a few minutes instead of a few seconds. Made of very sturdy smooth plastic -- no teeth marks at all so far and easy to clean. Non-skid bottom works well. BUT, the outer ring is much narrower than the inner rings, and bits of kibble or other food chunks get caught there. The dogs polish the inner rings but usually 1-6 chunks get left behind. My boyz just give up. It can be a bit of work for me to clean out those residues, too. I've used other designs of slow-feeder bowls by Outward Hound, and this is the only design that I've had a "stuck food" problem with.

My 37lbs dog used to inhale his food, it would take less than a minute for him to eat. Now, it takes around 3 minutes and we've seen a big improvement in him not having as much gas. The product works exactly as advertised. At home, we try to avoid food build up by soaking it overnight in cold water with dishwashing soap, since it's hard to hand wash the crevices thoroughly.

This slows down my German Shorthair. He spends a few minutes eating rather than seconds. The deep grooves make him have to really use his tongue to get to the food. We mostly feed kibble with “enrichment”. In the morning we put a little smear of peanut butter in it for his medicine. Every day we add some sort of extra item for variety and interest. Dried minnows, green beans, bananas for example. This feeder accommodates all of this.

This is the 4th bowl, (yes I know I should try a new one but my dog needs a slow feeder). The outer ring is so small that her kibble swells up and she can't get it out. But the other 3 bowls which were all the same size started to mold at the bottom no matter what I did to remove it, it stuck. So I get a new bowl every 12-18 months. But this time the bowl is a smidge smaller and makes things to difficult. Not thrilled.

This bowl definitely slows my hungry hounds at mealtime. Very good. The bowl shape and low outer rim make spilling a few kibbles onto the counter at each feeding inevitable. Picking up the filled bowl is also a challenge because there are no openings to get fingers underneath. Not big problems but this makes the feeding task more of a chore than it needs to be.

I needed a slow-bowl for my girl-Collie. A month ago I got this same bowl for my boy-Collie, who used to hoover his food. Then I noticed that my girl-Collie was trying to push him away from his bowl, even while he was eating. I think she was jealous that he had something that she didn't! So, I ordered a slo-bowl for her, same as his, and now peace reigns at feeding time.
