About Dr. Tim's Dog Food

Premium All-Natural Pet Foods and Treats

Dr. Tim's offers honest, nutritionally sound kibble, wet foods, dietary supplements and freeze-dried treats designed for every life stage. The high-quality ingredients include low-ash protein along with the right blend of carbohydrates, fats and fibers to allow your pet to lead a healthy life.

Foods Made to Match Your Pet

When shopping for Dr. Tim's pet foods, you'll notice the labeling indicates an activity level. That's because they're made to complement your pet's lifestyle, with ideal ratios of protein, fat, carbohydrates and fibers to help her thrive. You'll find recipes that are specially formulated for active pets, low-key pets, extreme athletes and those in need of weight management.

ACTIVE:

This food is designed for the sporting dog that's active more days than not—dogs who hunt or jog every day, herding dogs, police dogs and the like. It's made for maximum digestion, an important consideration for these dogs that's often overlooked. Protein types and levels, fat types and levels, and fiber sources are formulated to maximize performance and recovery.

CASUAL LIFESTYLE:

This is a diet intended for the dog who lives a normal lifestyle—sleeping on the couch, running around the backyard or going on car rides, walks or hikes and basically just living the good life. The only regular exercise she might get is tail wagging when she sees you at the end of the day, or some loving nose nudges

EXTREME ATHLETES:

This food is for dogs who are serious about working nearly every day for long periods of time, such as sled dogs and dogs who hunt most days of the season. It's extremely high in fat, high in protein and low in carbs, with the highest levels of essential omega-3 fatty acids and loads of antioxidants. Performance, endurance and recovery are all enhanced.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT:

This diet is intended for the dog who has put on some extra weight. High protein allows your overweight dog to be more active, and moderate fat allows her to feel satiated so she doesn't beg—an essential part of the equation. The omega-3 and antioxidant profiles help reduce the inflammatory stress that's prevalent in an overweight dog, too

Treats That Deliver

Dr. Tim's freeze-dried treats are formulated for both cats and dogs—perfect for multipet households. They're made from 100% real, USDA-inspected meats from Wisconsin. And since they're freeze-dried, you can give your pet all the nutrition and flavor of raw meat without any of the mess or inconvenience.

Top It Off With Nutrition

Dr. Tim's Flavor Booster is made of 100% real, USDA-inspected beef liver powder from Wisconsin that is freeze-dried to maintain more nutrients. It's perfect for use as a food topper to encourage pets to eat and enjoy their meals, which makes it a great choice for finicky dogs or those who are ill or tired of the same formula.

About Dr. Tim's

As a veterinarian and accomplished musher, Dr. Tim Hunt understood his dogs' need for a food that promotes stamina, endurance and performance through proper digestion. Armed with a cement mixer, a cache of ideas, and an aversion for other diets on the market, Dr. Tim took to his Michigan garage on a mission to formulate a food that replicated a natural, wild diet for his Alaskan Huskies. Today, Dr. Tim's focus has since expanded to bring an honest, nutritionally sound food—sourced only from North America's highest quality ingredients—to every dog.

Why does this ration not come in a larger sack?
Answer by Mastiffmomma5Mar 15, 2022
Largest they make is 24 lb bag. This is a better question for the manufacturer. You can email or message them and ask if they plan to make bigger bags.

Why put wood or saw dust in your food with what appears to be decent ingredients.
Answer by ChewyJul 03, 2019
Cellulose is used to create space for a non caloric laden ingredient. When you build a weight loss diet you have 100 spots to fill with ingredients, or 100%. Trying to keep the calories lower you need to fill some of the spots with ingredients that have no caloric value but does have a purpose such as cellulose for fiber. The remaining spots include higher protein, moderate fat, L-carnitine and other nutrients.

Looks like the ingredients include dried porcine plasma, which is a sprayed on dried pig blood product. I have just started reading up on it- is this product safe and healthy?
Answer by ChewyJul 04, 2019
Plasma is rich in important vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B12, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride, potassium and magnesium. Research with dogs has shown that the inclusion of plasma in dog food results in improved digestion and decreased fecal output.

Is the weight stated for weight loss the ideal weight of dog or the current weight?
Answer by ChewyOct 23, 2017
The weight stated is for both weight loss and ideal weight. The feeding instructions you should follow depends if you want to Maintenance or lose weight. If your dog is 50 pounds and you want to maintenance his weight, you should feed him 5 1/2 cups a day. If your dog is 50 pounds and you want to lose weight, you should feed him 4 1/2 cups a day.

Worked for my Dog!

Tried this for my dog for a year and let's just say I had great results with it! Last year the vet weighed him at 55 pounds(which he was overweight) so his current vet visit this year he weighed 46 pounds(which is the ideal weight). Please note that this doesn't happen overnight, it happens with time and patience but don't worry your pooch will be the right weight in no time! Not only did he lose weight but he loves the food in general, he always knows when it's meal time and gets excited!

Best Weight loss brand out there!

We have 3 dogs, a husky, a lab, and a pomeranian/chihuahua. Obviously 3 very extremely different breed types. I found that in the winter, my husky and pomchi were getting lazy with the weather and puting on the lbs. I tried other weight management dog foods, but they just continued to gain... until Dr Tim's. My husky lost 10lbs in 6 months and now is the right weight, she feels better and looks better! My pomchi also lost 3 lbs which is a lot since she only weighs 8 lbs. This dog food is amazing!!

Works For Weight Loss and Management

I first used this food for a disabled client’s 10 y.o. large dog who needed to lose 30 lbs while he was recuperating from a TPLO. Leo hated Royal Canin which was prescribed by the vet. I researched 10 other weight loss foods. Dr. Tim’s had a nutritional profile that I was satisfied with and, best of all, Leo loved it. My second experience with this food is for my 3 y.o. Dalmatian. We do a lot of training (ie, nose work, tricks, consent work for husbandry, obedience) which involves lots of treats. He was starting to look a bit thick when I decided to try Dr. Tim’s. It did the trick. Spot slimed back down. Unfortunately I’ll have to rotate to another food (because it’s a recommended practice to do that a few times a year). But Dr. Tim’s will always be in Spot’s food program.

Worth the Gas?!?

Jury is still out on this one. My golden loves it, and I’m sure she loves the amount she gets with it, but her gas on this food can clear the room quickly. It it horrible. Dr. Tim says it’s probably the peas (I was able to email them) and recommending adding their elk probiotic, thereby making this food combo as expensive as Rx food. Going to finish the bag and weigh her then decide if it’s worth this awful gas, or whether we need to find another option.

okay replacement

I have been giving my pups eukanuba fit body weight management food for years. Now I can’t seem to find it. It has been out of stock lately. Although my dogs don’t seem to mind this and it’s very similar ingredient the price for less food per bag is hitting the pocket book. I pay more for four pounds less.

Golden Retriever Success

My Golden retriever has been battling the bulge ever since she was spayed. I cut treats, increased exercise, and drastically reduced her portions but she just kept gaining. She had a blood panel done to rule out certain health conditions. I tried various brands and types of food over the last 2 years that either didn’t result in weight loss or didn’t agree with her in one way or another. Happy to say she’s been on Dr Tim’s Metabolite for 5 months and looks fantastic. She continues to lose weight and while she doesn’t attack this food as ravenously as some others, she does eat it and it seems to satisfy her. It took about 2 months before we saw some significant weight loss. I definitely recommend this food - just give it some time to work.

Top 1000 Contibutor

It gets the job done

I've been struggling to find a low-cal food that my dog doesn't mind, and Dr Tims made the cut! He has lost about a pound and has stood at a healthy weight since. Def going to recommend this to anyone I know whose dog needs to cut the cals

Dr. Tim's is the Best

Dr. Tim's dog food is excellent. I particularly look for food that does not have corn in it, since most cases of salmonella or tainted dog foods that are recalled are those with corn in them. My dogs eat Dr. Tim's dry food very eagerly.

Great Stuff!

My dog, Jorge, is overweight and his appetite varies from day to day. He has always turned his nose up at dry dog food. Dry dog food has to be mixed in with wet dog food beforehand for him to eat it. Now with Dr Tim’s he actually eats it dry. Amazing!!!
