For best performance, the fountain pump needs to be cleaned every two weeks. When cleaning the pump, we recommend cleaning the fountain and changing the filter as well. Multi-pet households may need to be cleaned more frequently.
Steps | Pump Cleaning Instructions |
---|---|
1. | Use your nail or a tool with a small edge to remove the face plate on the end opposite the cord. Please note: the Outdoor Dog Fountain pump face plate slides out. |
2. | Pull up on the small lip to remove the teardrop-shaped stator. |
3. | Remove the impeller by pulling up from underneath it with your finger. |
4. | Clean all parts of the pump using soap and warm water with a small brush, such as a toothbrush. Completely rinse the pump, then reassemble. |
Dishwasher safe excluding the pump.
Tips on Use
When being introduced to the Drinkwell Pet Fountain, your pet may be cautious of this new and unusual object. After beginning operation of your fountain, simply allow your pet to adjust at his or her own pace. Some pets may take several days or longer to begin use.
Your pet may prefer that the fountain be placed away from their normal feeding area. Try plugging it in somewhere else, like a laundry room, a bathroom or another corner of the kitchen.
Add ice cubes to the bowl for refreshing, ice-cold running water!
Troubleshooting
The adaptor is warm to the touch. Unplug the fountain and plug it into a surge protector.
The fountain feels slimy.
- If you have multiple pets or dogs use the fountain, the slimy feeling may be caused by your pet’s saliva. Change the water and clean your fountain more frequently to prevent this.
- Make sure the fountain parts are rinsed thoroughly after cleaning the fountain. Soap residue may cause the sliminess.
- To reduce mold and mildew, soak the fountain in a 90% water, 10% bleach solution for 15 minutes. Be sure to rinse every part thoroughly before re-assembling the fountain.
- If there is a white chalky substance in the fountain, your fountain may have a mineral deposit build-up from hard water. To remove these deposits, clean the fountain parts with a 90% water, 10% vinegar solution. Rinse all parts thoroughly afterwards. Use filtered or purified water instead of hard tap water to prevent this.
The fountain is leaking. Sometimes water around the fountain is caused by pets drinking. Some pets are prone to spilling. Watch your pet when he drinks to see if this is the cause. If it is, you can purchase a fountain mat or other water-resistant mat to place under the fountain. First, you need to figure out where the leak is. Look for visible cracks in the bowl.
- If there are no visible cracks in the bowl, place the fountain on a towel to see where the leak is.
- If the cord is wet above the water line, loosen the cord and allow some slack so water won’t travel up the cord.
The fountain is too loud. A low humming noise is normal, but it should not be loud. Some fountains hum a little louder than others.
- If the water is making too much noise, add water to the fill line and reduce the flow using the flow control knob. If the motor is humming loudly, make sure the water level is above the minimum line.
- When turning on the fountain or replacing the filter, the motor may make more noise than usual. It should return to normal levels within a few minutes.
- Unplug the fountain for 15 seconds. If the noise stops when plugged back in, it’s possible that some debris is caught on the impeller. Remove the pump and clean the impeller. Try rubbing a small amount of vegetable oil onto the magnetic pin with a Q-tip to lubricate the impeller.
- Clean your fountain completely. See below for full cleaning steps.
- Hard water buildup can sometimes cause more noise. Try adding plain white vinegar inside the pump's cavity (without the impeller) and allow it to soak for 10-15 minutes. Allow the impeller to soak in a separate bowl of vinegar for the same duration of time. Clean all fountain parts in soap and water before reassembling the fountain.
- The Big Dog and Original fountains may be noisier due to a loose impeller pin. Gently but firmly press down on this pin to re-seat it into its proper place in the motor. If the pin has completely dislodged itself from the motor, it cannot be placed back into the motor cavity properly and the motor will have to be replaced.
The fountain stopped working. There are several possible causes for a fountain to stop working. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the motor to start pumping water once it’s refilled or plugged in. If water doesn’t flow after 5 minutes, try these troubleshooting tips:
- Unplug and re-plug the fountain into the same outlet.
- Check the cord. If it has any frayed or exposed wires, your pet may have been chewing on the cord. To prevent this, you can purchase a cord cover from most hardware stores. You could also try securing the cord to the floor with duct tape .
- Lack of regular cleaning may result in the pump becoming clogged with pet hair and food debris. The pump must be cleaned every 2 weeks to ensure proper function. Please refer to the owner's manual for detailed instructions on how to properly clean your motor. To clean the motor: Remove the motor from the fountain. Lift the impeller (looks like a small white propeller) out of the motor. There may be a faceplate cover over the impeller than can be pulled up with a coin or fingernail. Wash the impeller in soapy water, removing hair and other gunk that has collected around it. Pour soapy water inside the motor cavity and clean with a small round brush like the one found in the Fountain Cleaning Kit. A small toothbrush might work too, or anything that can reach all the way inside of the cavity. Rinse all parts well before returning to the fountain.
- Water quality can also affect the pump and how effectively it runs. Hard water will cause calcium deposits to build up in the pump's cavity, blocking the impeller from spinning. If there is evidence of hard water build-up inside the pump, try adding plain white vinegar inside the pump's cavity (without the impeller) and allow it to soak for 10-15 minutes. Allow the impeller to soak in a separate bowl of vinegar for the same duration of time. Clean all fountain parts in soap and water before reassembling the fountain.
- Make sure the cord does not have any frayed or exposed wires due to pets possibly chewing the cord. If your pet is prone to chewing, visit your local hardware store and purchase a conduit cover to protect the cord.
- Pumps last for several years with proper cleaning. If the pump has been in regular use for this period of time, it may be old and need to be replaced.
- The fountain is to be used indoors only, with the exception of the Outdoor Dog Fountain. Outdoor usage for all other fountains can cause damage to the pump, at which point the pump would need to be replaced. The fountain parts and pump are not UL approved for outdoor use.
- If the pump was exposed to low water levels for a prolonged period of time, the pump's motor may have burned out and the pump may need to be replaced.
There’s black dirt in the bowl. This black stuff is loose activated carbon from the filter and is completely harmless for your pet to drink. The carbon filter is made of organic coconut shells. Rinse the filter in cold water before placing it in the fountain to prevent this. Some filters may shed more carbon than others due to differing consistency of carbonl in each batch of filters, so don’t be surprised if some filters leave behind more carbon dust than others.

How do I clean the fountain?
- Unplug the fountain. Dump the water. Disassemble the fountain.
- The fountain is dishwasher safe except for the motor and cord. Either wash in the top rack of your dishwasher or hand-wash these parts. If your dishwasher runs too hot, we recommend hand-washing. When hand-washing, use a bottle brush, aquarium brush, soft sponge, or brushes included in the Fountain Cleaning Kit and dish soap. (Please note: if you have the Avalon or Pagoda fountains, the filter housing is hand wash only. It is not dishwasher safe.)
- Remove the motor from the fountain.
- Lift the impeller (looks like a small white propeller) out of the motor. There may be a faceplate cover over the impeller than can be pulled up with a coin or fingernail. Wash the impeller in soapy water, removing hair and other gunk that has collected around it.
- Pour soapy water inside the motor cavity and clean with a small round brush like the one found in the Fountain Cleaning Kit. A cotton swab or small toothbrush might work too, or anything that can reach all the way inside of the cavity.
- Rinse all parts well before returning to the fountain.
- Re-assemble fountain, replacing the filter and pre-filter as needed.
- Place the fountain where desired. Fill with water. Re-plug in fountain.
Do I need to use a filter with the fountain? The filter is not required for normal operation of the fountain, but it does significantly improve the overall cleanliness and taste of the water for your pets. The filter removes bad tastes and odors to improve the taste of the water and catches hair and small particles to keep the water cleaner.
Filters are still helpful even if you use filtered water in the fountain. The activated carbon continuously cleans water as it flows through the filter. The pre-filter protects the pump from dirt, fur, drool, and debris.
How do I get my pets to drink from the fountain? Pets, especially cats, can be a little timid with the fountains at first. This is a new object added to their environment, so give your pet enough time to get used to the fountain at their own pace. This time frame will usually only take a few days, and it is very rare that a pet will refuse to use the product entirely. If your pet prefers to drink running water from the faucet or shower, she will probably get used to the fountain very quickly. Here are a few tips to help transition your pet:
- Set up the fountain without plugging it in. This way your pet can get used to drinking from the fountain without the noise and splash of running water.
- Plug in the fountain for short periods of time, until your pets begin to feel comfortable. Try setting it to a lower flow setting.
- Once your pet is somewhat used to the fountain, remove other water sources.
- If your pet still isn’t interested in the fountain, make it more appealing with some flavoring. Remove the filter from the fountain, then add tuna juice or bouillon to the water until your pet is used to the new product. After that, you can clean the fountain, replace the filter, and refill the fountain with regular water.
What are the filters made of? These filters are similar to filters used in fish tanks. They are safe to use with your pet’s drinking water. The organic activated carbon used in the filters is made of coconut shells.
What’s the difference between the regular carbon filters and the premium filters? Once the filter has been used, the activated carbon tends to settle in the bottom of the pouch. The premium filters have 6 smaller pouches, rather than the 2 in the original filters, so the carbon is spread out more evenly for better filtration quality.
Why do I need to change the filters? Over time, debris gets stuck in the outer fabric of the filter, making it more difficult for the water to pass through it. The inner part of the filter contains granulated carbon with hundreds or thousands of microscopic holes, which bind to impurities in the water that cause bad tastes and smells. This binding prevents impurities them from returning to the water. Eventually, the holes become clogged and can no longer remove impurities.
Is the plastic in your fountains BPA-free? Yes. All of our plastic fountains and plastic parts are BPA-free, including cords, pumps, and filter housing.
1-Year Warranty.

I would not recommend this product
By CatMom3 on Apr 18, 2021
I am almost always pleased, even more than pleased, with the products I purchase from Chewy. This one, unfortunately was a disappointment. I wanted this fountain to provide fresh continuous flowing water for my three house cats. The pump in the fountain has to pump water from the bottom level up to the top tier and then it flows to the bottom and is filtered and run through continuously. The pump in it the worked at first but never did continue to pump water unless I kept adding water. Then it quit completely. I do not know if I got a faulty pump or all the pumps that come with this product are insufficient. Chewy did give me a refund and I ordered a different fountain.

AWESOME for small-medium dogs
By L1zz on Apr 15, 2021
After buying a small fountain for my kitties, & discovering my 2 dogs(a Shitzu & a chiweenie) would only drink from the small fountain- I decided to get this for my 2 small dogs, & my guys 2 dogs(a schnoodle and Rat Terrier)...his 2 dogs can't get enough water from it, & my 2 dogs no longer have to fight w/ the cats over their fountain. Easy to take apart to clean, while all the dogs are outside. If you are as hesitant as I was about pet fountains ...THIS fountain is worth the purchase...they all drink way more water now...Im actually going to get a 3rd of this brand for the outside/back yard...for the pups when they want to stay outside...

It is inconvenient
By Julia22 on Mar 16, 2021
I bought this fountain about a year and a half ago for my cat. I realized immediately how difficult it is to clean. I considered buying the drinkwell cleaning kit but I don’t think it would have helped. I have several small pipe cleaners and a couple larger bottle cleaners and not a single one can reach to scrub off the grime that builds up in the corners. I have been fighting with this thing every time I try to clean it, and it’s never been totally clean and slime free a single time since I started using it. That being said, it functions. It pushes the water out and it flows. My pets seem to like it fine. Works Great
By Rachw84 on Mar 11, 2021
I see a lot of reviews stating it gets slimy and the filter turns black after a month. Umm, I wonder how often are they giving their pets clean water and cleaning the bowl. Never? Pets should have clean water several times a day and you should clean the bowl and change the filter more often than once a month. You wouldn’t like it if your parents made you drink out of the same unwashed cup for a month. Wash the bowl and motor with vinegar to get rid of the slime buildup— which comes from the dogs’ saliva. I have 3 of these systems for my rescue dogs. Dogs have dirty mouths. These help keep the water cleaner so I don’t have to clean and fill the water bowls 10 times a day. I fill them up with a pitcher and the clean them out every other day. This saves me a lot of time and the dogs drink more water because the water is cleaner. … more

Auto water
By Ravyen on Apr 16, 2021
So my cat's like it and use it. It is quite you would never know it's on. But for me personally I HATE the look of this things. It looks like a toilet bowl and is a lot small then I thought it was. But again my girls use it and that is what matter, the look is why I will not give 5 stars.

Very pleased!
By Water on Apr 20, 2021
Our vet recommended a moving water source for our dogs and cat. I like that this helps to keep the water fresh and our cat seems to drink more water than when we just had a bowl of water out. Was fun watching our small dogs get acquainted with it, as of this review, they all love it !

It holds lots of water.
By Ccarr on Feb 18, 2021
It’s nice and big but super hard to clean. The skinny areas need a bottle brush to clean. If not cleaned, it gets a film on it. I wish the longer part of the cord was attached to the wall and the shorter part attached to the machine. It would be easier to carry and not worry about getting wet while washing it. I would recommend it to a friend though because it holds lots of water and our cat loves it. That’s all that really matters.

Would recommend, however...
By Jesy on Apr 1, 2021
Worked great as used daily for two years. Would have kept running well if the plug didnt slip into water. Only catch with this fountain is it gets very dirty and hard to clean when it comes to the top part. I tried metal straw pipe cleaner and still couldnt get all of the grit out.

waste of money
By ASE98 on Feb 7, 2021
Brought this fountain and I used to like it but I don’t understand how I can spend 30 minutes cleaning it because there’s a lot of tiny areas in the fountain that collect gunk that won’t come off easily. And then literally the next day there is foam collecting on the right side of the fountain, what’s even the point of cleaning it and having the filter if it’s just gonna get all foamy/slimy in a few days. I get you can put it in the dish washer but if I can’t just scrub it clean, what will my cheap dish washer do? Throwing this fountain in the trash and buying somewhere else cuz this site sells crap.

Disappointed
By Pappy on Feb 7, 2021
Bought this water fountain in September of 2020. It was doing good and I went to check the filter after about a month and noticed the slimly black stuff on the pump and some was built up in the top where the water cascades into the feeder section. Cleaned the filter screen, pump and container. Checked it again and same thing. I have tried to find the charcoal filter but no luck. Took it out use it through the pump. That was not good either so we have discontinued using it and gone back to a standard water bowl. I still like Chewy, but will not get another auto fill feeder .
