Which side of filter should be facing water bowl of fountain

The water should flow through the filter's polyester side first and exit out the black side. The position of the filter will vary depending on the fountain model.

What's the difference between the regular filters for the original Drinkwell Fountain and the premium filters?

The activated carbon is distributed between six pockets on the premium, while these have two, to prevent settling and provide even filtration that removes bad tastes and odor from your pet’s water.
