When the Himalayan chew gets too small can you put it in the microwave and make it get larger like a cookie

Answer by ChewyJul 14, 2018
The ends of these Himalayan chews can be microwaved to enlarge it's size. This is done to eliminate the chances of choking.

Approximately how many chews are in a bag and what is the average size of a chew?

Answer by ChewyJun 13, 2018
Each 1 pound bag contains 3 or 4 large, thick pieces measuring 6-8 inches in length and 1-2 inches in width.

Should these be taken away once the dog has chewed them down to a small size? My concern is him choking on a small piece.

Answer by ChewyJul 09, 2018
Always monitor pet with chews. When item becomes too small for your pet to safely chew, put piece in microwave for 90 seconds. Allow to cool before giving to your pet.

How long does a typical chew last in terms of durability? Is this a one session chew?

Answer by ChewyJul 13, 2018
The length of time the treats will last will vary from pet to pet. For some it may last longer than others.

I give these to my corgi. He LOVES to chew and it still takes him about 5 hours of nonstop chewing to get these down to a point where I take it away. I soak the piece I take from him in boiling water (poured on top into a dish then let cool) then microwave it, let it completely cool then your dog gets a VERY MESSY treat. I can't stand the smell of these but it wears out my dog really well. His paws and chest are usually soaking wet after a few hour session with these.

What I love the most about the yak treats is that they are not processed like rawhides which I don’t think are necessarily good for pets. They are a great healthy alternative and the fact that once the treat gets very small, just soak it in water for about 10 mins and pop in microwave for about 15 seconds. It puffs up and is a crunchy airy treat for your dog so you don’t have to toss out the small bits for fear of them getting swallowed.

We have very mouthy pups who need to chew on things for long periods of time. These used to last about 15 hrs for my pup but he eats them much faster now, in about 5-6 hrs. We did have a scare when he ate some of it without chewing and it took about 20 hrs for that large piece to pass. We thought we were going to have to go through surgery but luckily he was able to pass it. I throw it out once he gets it down to a 2-3 inch long piece to avoid the scares now but we can microwave the end. He likes it as a chew so we don’t do that but others could.

We have 6 dogs and 4 of them chewed on these a lot! However, one dog that's almost 12 years of age who only chewed on one a little bit, suddenly had nasal discharge. My vet found a broken tooth with root exposed on an upper back tooth which feeds to the sinuses. Just be careful and watch all dogs. I thought they'd chew on them and they'd soften a good deal thus not being much of a concern for breaking teeth

My dogs love these. Unfortunately, they will no longer have these. One of my dogs swallowed one that was nearly 3”. I had no idea that she had. Two days later she got sick and threw it up on the carpet. It could have been much worse. She could have needed medical intervention or worse, she could have died. Please be very careful when allowing your fur-babies to have these.
