Pet Christmas Stockings That You Can Make (Fast and Easy!)

Digging into a stocking brimming with gifts, treats, and toys is one of the best parts of Christmas morning—especially when you can share the fun with your pets. While you can buy ready made pet Christmas stockings, nothing is going to be quite as fabulous as one you make yourself with your furry (or feathery or scaly) family member in mind.

To make it easy and fast, we’ve created three downloadable Christmas stocking patterns just for you. In the shapes of a dog bone, fish and a traditional one, these are blank templates you can embellish and personalize to make your own super special pet Christmas stockings:

Once you’ve picked the shape you love, gather some basic supplies from a local fabric or craft store. Cozy wool, cottage-inspired ticking or luxe faux fur are just some ideas for pet Christmas stockings. Go for bold colors and patterns or stay more neutral. Repurpose an old quilt, shrunken sweater, wooly sock or pair of jeans. Make it small or oversized. Blingy or old-world elegant. Whatever suits your style and the style of your home is what will make the results pet-perfect.

Get started by making a blank pet Christmas stocking that you will later trim. You will ideally have access to a sewing machine, but you can also hand stitch or use iron-on fusible webbing to attach sides.

Follow these basic instructions for constructing the stocking of your choice:

1. Wash fabric to ensure it doesn’t shrink and then press well.
2. Download your preferred stocking template and print, enlarging or shrinking as necessary.
3. Place on fabric, trace and cut out pieces.
4. With right sides facing and leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance, sew the perimeter of the stocking.
5. Turn right side out.

• Felted wool fabric
• Faux fur trim
• Two-sided fusible interfacing
• Contrast color felt
• Ribbons and trim

Start with a completed blank stocking using the instructions above. Cut a strip of faux fur trim to the correct width, stitch right sides together to form a loop. Insert right side of faux fur against wrong side of stocking and stitch along top edge. Turn cuff right side out and tack in place.

Download a silhouette and cut to size on contrast fabric. Fuse with interfacing. Trim as desired.

Start with a completed blank stocking using the instructions above, but before turning right side out, stitch seam binding to sewn edges for a clean finish.

Line the un-sewn top edge with a length of ribbon, either stitching or use iron-on fusible webbing. It only takes a minutes and will help to hold shape once filled. Turn right side out. Attach a loop of ribbon and trim as desired.

• Heavyweight linen burlap fabric
• Contrast fabrics
• Seam binding
• Hot glue gun/glue
• Ribbons and trims

Start with a completed blank stocking using the instructions above, but before turning right side out, stitch seam binding to sewn edges to inhibit fraying. Trim and glue an eye on either side. Create smaller dangling fish and stuff with scrap fabric; attach with ribbons and make ribbon loop for hanging.

• Transfer paper or fusible felt letters

We left this one a blank canvas! Start with a completed blank stocking using the instructions above. Cut a strip of fabric to the correct width, stitch right sides together to form a loop. Insert right side against wrong side of stocking and stitch along top edge. Turn cuff right side out and tack in place. Trim cuff with ribbons, transfer an image to the fabric or use fusible cut out felt letters to spell out pet’s name. Add a ribbon loop for hanging.

Repurpose that old sweater! Start with a completed blank stocking using the instructions above. Cut a strip of faux fur trim to the correct width, stitch right sides together to form a loop. Insert right side of faux fur against wrong side of stocking and stitch along top edge. Turn cuff right side out and tack in place.

Cut a small pouch (perfect for a small treat) from felt and fuse to stocking. Trim and add a ribbon loop.
