Substrate is necessary to the health and well-being of your pet because it absorbs waste, helps control humidity levels and encourages burrowing. Exo Terra Plantation Soil Tropical Terrarium Reptile Substrate is made from compressed coconut husk fiber from the plantations of tropical Asia. This ecological substrate is ideal for increasing humidity in the terrarium and is safe for frogs, salamanders and burrowing or digging animals. The substrate can also be used as an incubation medium and as a nutritional planting soil for live plants.

Place the brick in a 2.6-gallon bucket and add 100 fl oz water. Let it soak for about 30 minutes until it completely absorbs the water. Stir the substrate to ensure that no clumps remain and that the substrate is ready to use. Spread a 1-2" layer of Exo Terra Plantation Soil on the terrarium floor (up to 4" when used for burrowing animals or as planting soil). Water or mist the substrate according to the humidity level required and use an Exo Terra Hygrometer to monitor the humidity level.
On my search for the perfect medium to put in the ratty boys dig box I tried this. It was the right consistency however I did run into some issues with it. The bag smelled slightly mildewy when I opened it. It should not smell mildewy at all. I set it out to air in the sun, not familiar with the product, hoping it just needed to air out. It never lost the smell, so I didn't put it in for them. I did notice as well, when it was dry it became powdery. So, in conclusion, if you want to try this in your ratty dig box, just use caution. If it smells mildewy don't use it. If it is kept damp they love it, but if it gets dry it gets powdery and I would be concerned about respiratory issues.
He is loving his new tank additions. Can't wait to purchase more for his big enclosure. Shipment was quick as always. Love Chewy!!!!
I honestly like the product, and I used it as a top soil for planting dandelions. So, my tortoises aren't able to eat the soil.
It’s actually a 8 quart bag instead of 7.2 quart!!
I apparently need to always keep this on hand as I am getting tarantulas as if they were Pokemon and I gotta catch em all. They should each have a few inches of substrate depending on the species and this substrate seems to be a favorite.
I read its good to use for tomatoe frogs will also use for my pacman frog great price fast shipping
I like it alot. Very soft. My Lizard zippy loves to burrow in it. Holds humidity very well
After looking at many small pet blogs, I found that plantation soil was a safe digging substrate for my mice and other digging rodents. I gave them a little box with this soil in it with treats hidden in it and they absolutely love it.
My crabs r very happy, havent seen them much since they buried themselves lol
