Answer by ChewySep 01, 2020
This food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages excluding the growth of large size dogs (70lbs or more as an adult). The feeding chart is a general recommendation. It can be adjusted for your specific pet when also taking into account their age, activity level, etc. If you are uncertain of the amount, you can always consult with your veterinarian.

Dog likes it fine, more affordable than others

When we purchased our hand-me-down dog he was on whatever chicken formula they had at the shelter, so we picked this food to transition him to at the recommendation of our local pet supply store. Our dog has always eaten it all and licked the bowl clean, which I don't have any comparison for so who knows if he's particularly picky or not. (We have given other brands in a pinch once or twice before and he has always eaten whatever we give him). I also have no comparison for if his coat is shinier or not. Here's what I love about it: (1) The recommended portions are smaller (I guess because it's protein dense?) so while the bag is the same price as other brands, I don't have to buy it as frequently, and he eats less, which also means...(2) ...his poops are smaller - this isn't a big deal but it's a perk for me when all that's between the steaming pile and my hand is a thin little plastic bag! (3) What prompted me to write this review is that Chewy is out of stock right now, so I checked the manufacturer and found that they sell it for the exact same price, which makes me feel better about Chewy - no markup! (at least on this product). Fingers crossed Chewy gets it back in stock soon but if not I will buy it direct until they do.

They love it !

I have a finicky terrier and a lg pit. This brand was suggested to me by a pet nutritionist. I’ve been very surprised at how well they both took to this change. They seem to really like it Even with no additions or toppings

Dogs didn’t like flavor

My dogs hated this flavor. It’s also just chicken meal not deboned chicken which was disappointing. Chewy was out of their usual flavor, lamb, so I had to pick this. They didn’t eat it and it’s not as high quality as the lamb. Really disappointing replacement

Best Food!

Firstmate is the first food I bought for my heeler/lab puppy. We mixed it in with Firstmate canned food to make it easier for him to eat. He has always thrives on it! His coat is shiny and he is full of energy. His vet tried to convince us to switch to Hills SD or Purina ProPlan. He hated both and even after transitioning the correct, slow way he had so many GI/digestive issues. We switched him back to Firstmate chicken and are back to a happy pup! Would highly recommend to any dog owner!

Thanks, Firstmate for a great dogfood!

Unbelievable!!! I switched my hoarded skinny and dull furred GSD from prescription food (Hills) for IBD to this exact dogfood (after several fails with other brands) and he is thriving like never before!!! We adopted him and he came with the other food: 3 cups am and 3cups pm. Yet he was never satisfied and always seemed hungry :( Now he takes 1.5 cups am and pm with Firstmate chicken mixed in (another amazing product!) He is happier and more interested in all foods and his coat sheds about 80% less and is shiny and beautiful!!! Thank you, Firstmate!

Dog Says Yuck

I switched to the chicken formula from the lamb formula with the hope that my pup would like it better. He doesn’t. He likes it even less. I love the idea of this food, as my pup has a strong aversion to starch, but when I have to entice him by adding stuff to it, it isn’t worth it. He will eat the good stuff and spit the kibble on the floor. Not sure I’ll have better luck with the fish formula. This has been an expensive trial process.

Dog likes it but...

This is a great food and it hasn’t upset my terrier mix’s super sensitive stomach. He is typically on Hills Low Fat ID for his stomach issues and that food helps him stay comfortable but I wanted to get him on something more healthy and less full of fillers and junk. This has been working out. Unfortunately, the kibble size is problematic for him. He struggles a bit with the bigger, harder kibble. They are noticeably bigger then the Hills he is used to and I can tell he has a hard time with them. I might try a bag of FirstMate’s other chicken and blueberry small bites version to see how he does on that. This is a great food but just too big for my older, smaller dog.

Good grain friendly choice

I've always fed my dog Blue Buffalo dry dog food supplemented with wet/canned food. First Mate was introduced to me by my sister. I like the grain friendly choice and my dog loves it. The pieces are bigger than the Blue Buffalo Small Breed but he doesn't seem to have a problem with it. I'll buy the bigger bag next time.

My girl LOVES FirstMate!

My border collie mix is extremely picky when it comes to food. She absolutely loves FirstMate. I trust the ingredients and the quality of food that this company puts out. I highly recommend this brand to anyone looking for a great dry dog food.
