Which bag size would be best recommended for a 20 gallon long?
Answer by ChewyMay 28, 2019
Determining how much substrate to buy for your new aquarium depends on the size and shape of your tank, as well as the depth of the substrate bed you wish to achieve. We suggest 1 pound of substrate per gallon, to achieve a 1 inch bed or 2 pounds per gallon, for a 2 inch deep bed. In general, for a 20 gallon tank you'd need 20-40 pounds of substrate.

A must for plan's of a planted tank!

I decided on this product after doing my due diligence. After doing a few water changes over a few day's, to minimize the cloudiness of this substrate. But after the initial introduction and You format your tank. You will then realize just how special this substrate really is. Not only is it great for your plants, but it also helps to lower your PH for keeping fish that require lower or neutral PH..

Fluval Substrate

I wanted this for a heavily planted aquascape. No rinse required but it does take about 24 for "particles" to be filtered out. Only drawback.

Great for plants!

I haven't actually gotten a chance to add the shrimp to the tank yet, but it sure did help the plants grow! I've got a full carpet going after only a week and a half!

Repeat Customer

I am building a new tank and I chose to use Fluval Stratum again. I have had excellent plant growth from my previous purchase. This is a soft substrate that all fish and invertebrates enjoy. I am even able to use a gravel vac (on occasion) to clean it when necessary. Be sure to add water very slowly and NOT directly to substrate to avoid making a cloudy mess. Very happy with this product, I highly recommend.

Plants like it

This stuff is a trick. I recommend doing this before you have fish. I already had fish and a tank and was switching it to a real planted tank. I also topped it with gravel to help minimize dirty water. But the water still got dirty. You will have a temporary amonia spike for some reason and the ph will be lowered. I had an original ph of 8+ and it turned it neutral to ~7-7.5. crazy right?! Also the water looks good. Like it's clearer. I always had yellowish water for some reason. The Ammonia was gone in a day and fish didn't mind. I have good established filters. I filled tank slowly and with plate on top of gravel. Water was DARK couldn't even see through it. Gave it an hour and it improved then I turned the filter system on. I had to get my fish back in there. Let filter run an hour and it looked really good. Then I put fish in. By morning it was crystal clear. I have done water change and no dirty water was stired up. It remained clear. You don't deep siphoned this stuff. Just the surface. If I could do it over I'd place all my ornamental rocks drift wood THEN fill with the stratum. I placed it on top and kind of smooshed it in. This crushed the strata and causes more loose particle. I DID rinse this with NO agitation prior to placement in mesh strainer.

Good planted substrate

Nice color contrast with plants/shrimp/fish. Used about 8 lbs. for 10 gal tank. Lightweight substrate. A little pricey but worth it.

Plant substrate

One of the best substrates out there for a planted tank. The extra money you spend on this will make up for itself in plant growth and a healthy ecosystem for your aquarium. That means less money on other things down the road.
