Questions & Answers

Can this be added to an established tank without harming the fish?
Answer by ChewyApr 09, 2019
It's not recommended to add this to an already established tank. This sand should be gently rinsed with clean, fresh water, then place into the aquarium before adding the water, rocks and décor. All filters and pumps should be started before introducing the fish back into the tank. It's best to read the directions on the bag before use.

Is this good for turtles?
Answer by ChewyJul 05, 2018
This sand is appropriate for most freshwater aquariums including turtles, angel fish, tetras, cichlids and more.

How many bags will be needed for 65 gallon aquarium?
Answer by ChewyJun 12, 2019
Determining how much substrate to buy for your new aquarium depends on the size and shape of your tank, as well as the depth of the substrate bed you wish to achieve. We suggest 1 pound of substrate per gallon, to achieve a 1 inch bed or use 2 pounds per gallon, for a 2 inch deep bed.

Very pretty sand!

This sand looks beautiful in my tank. You can see all the little sand crystals. I also love that it came with the water clarifier so I didn’t have to buy that separately. The color really makes my live plants and fish look great, and my ghost shrimp love it too.

Don’t wash it!

Do not rinse this sand! It contains good live bacteria and if you rinse it, you take all of what you paid for away! I put 20lb into my 10 gallon and love the look. It did not cloud my water even a little bit, I used a pitcher to slowly pour the water in one corner and let the water work it’s way around. Absolutely zero issue with clouding.

So easy to use

The instructions on the bag were amazing! It was so easy step-by-step instructions and suggestions that it was easy for me. And that was important because I am in a Mobile Wheelchair with very bad arthritis and the instructions help me to lessen my stress! I highly recommend this product and will use it again since I only got a 20 pound bag and I’ll need another one.

Good substrate for my axolotl

I got this for my axolotl, Pudding, now that he's big enough to be on sand. It settled in record time, much faster than other brands of aquarium sand I've used. It was actually pretty impressive! It's very fine which is good for axolotls, and he's been much happier walking around on it. I also appreciate that it's easy to clean - I use a turkey baster to pick up waste.

Don’t rinse the sand!

I’ve read several reviews about people rinsing the sand. Don’t rinse it! This sand, and I believe most if not all the caribsea sand, includes live bacteria to help establish your tank. That’s what you’re paying for. Open the package, pour out sand, fill up tank. Add the packet of solution included in the sand to help settle the particles. That’s it. I like all the caribsea sand but I like this one in particular. It’s a beautiful color and stays light.

works great for my res tank!

I put the hose in the bag and let it run for a few minutes and then poured it out into the bucket and washed it some more with my hands, whole process took about 15 minutes and there was no cloudiness with my water!! I bought two bags for my forty galloon tank which was the perfect amount, I’m glad I didn’t have to deal with cloudiness vs. if I had bought play sand from a hardware store. It’s a bit pricier but it’s worth it, I was afraid of dealing with the messiness/dirty cloudy aspect of play sand! I recommend this product if you don’t mind shelling out a bit more money.

Best Sand For Turtles

It’s natural and looks great in my tank I seen people complain about it being messy but when you put the sand in you just need to fill with cold water and when it’s half way full use room temperature and it won’t cloud the tank at all I didn’t even rinse the sand
